Mangaluru, Mar 24: The scare of decreased level of water in Thumbay dam, the lifeline of water supply to the city, is over for the time being. The water level has risen to six meters now in Thumbay dam as the water was flown from AMR dam at Shamboor. This water is enough to feed 60 days of water requirement of the city.
The water level in the Thumbay vented dam dropped to five meters owing to the complete stoppage of inflow of water from the Netravati river. However, the level rose to six meters on the morning of Saturday, March 23 after the inflow of water from AMR dam Shamboor.
According to the orders of the deputy commissioner, one gate of the dam was opened at 6 pm on March 21 and the water inflow was allowed till 8 pm of March 22. The level of water in the AMR dam at Shamboor has gone down to four meters now. However, only 2.5 meters of water can be used from this dam as 1.5 meter of water has to be left in the dam always.
The water from the Netravati river is getting evaporated due to the extreme heat from the sunlight of summer. The water is required not only for drinking but for agriculture also. The officials say that the same level can be maintained for the next 10 days.
There is a possibility that the Mangaluru City Corporation might have to ration the drinking water needs of the city for the next two months.
