Mumbai, Feb 27: Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray claimed on Thursday that he had advised LK Advani to retain Narendra Modi as chief minister of Gujarat after 
the Godhra massacre.

Following Godhra, there were plans in the BJP to remove Modi from office. “However, I told Advani not to dislodge Modi. I said ‘Modi gaya toh Gujarat gaya’ (If Modi is removed then Gujarat will go out of BJP’s hand),” Thackeray claimed in an article in the Sena mouthpiece ‘Saamna’.

The reference to Modi is significant since he has been appointed in charge of the BJP’s Lok Sabha election campaign in Maharashtra. This is an assignment which has given Modi a pre-eminence in the BJP the kind of which Pramod Mahajan enjoyed till his assassination in 2006.

By making it appear that Modi owes his job to his intervention, Thackeray has clearly tried to prevent Modi from overshadowing Sena in the poll campaign. In fact, he has snubbed Modi by dismissing any comparison between the Gujarat chief minister and the late Pramod Mahajan.

Thackeray’s editorial came in a sharp response to BJP leader Gopinath Munde’s statement, saying that in Modi, Maharashtra has found a leader in Mahajan’s mould. “Why compare Mahajan and Modi? Mahajan was perched at the top. There will not be another Pramod Mahajan and the BJP will always miss Pramod,” he added.

Marathi ‘manoos’ in demand in Gandhinagar

Gandhinagar: If you were a Maharashtrian, you would have felt rather important in the Gujarat Vidhan Sabha building on Wednesday. Actually, Marathi language was in demand as there was a mad scramble to decipher the ‘Saamna’ editorial among officials. Personal secretaries of ministers and even some senior officers were seen searching for Marathi-speaking people. Even security persons were despatched to go and round up people who could translate from Marathi to Gujarati. Officials were seen moving around with print-outs of the edit. “My minister has given me only 10 minutes to get this translated,” said one personal secretary who was in a tearing hurry.
