Bengaluru: Udupi RTO Varnekar suspended for demanding bribe

Bengaluru, Mar 20: Commissioner of transport and road safety and disciplinary authority has ordered the suspension of Udupi Regional Transport Officer (RTO) R M Varnekar on the accusation of asking bribe for the repayment of road tax of the car that was burnt in the Aero India Show in the city.
The car owned by Vignesh, a native of Udupi, was burnt during the fire mishap that occurred in the city recently during the Aero India Show. He had to get the life time road tax paid to the car back from the government. RTO Varnekar had asked bribe to release the amount. Vignesh had complained about the matter to the Anti-corruption Bureau (ACB). The ACB officials had caught Varnekar red handed while receiving the bribe from Vignesh. Varnekar is in judicial custody.
The transport department, which considered the case as of serious nature, suspended Varnekar under Karnataka Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Guidelines- 1957-rule-10 (1) (D) and 10 (1) (A). The order is implemented with immediate effect as per the publication of the department.
