Karkala: Forest dept objects cutting of trees - Agumbe Ghat repair work stalled

Daijiworld Media Network - Karkala (MS)

Karkala, Mar 19: The repair work of Agumbe Ghat has received a setback yet again. The earlier order of closure of the ghat for repair work from March 19 is postponed temporarily due to the objection raised by zonal wildlife department. The vehicles can move on this ghat as usual. This information was given by deputy commissioner of Shivamogga K A Dayananda.

Though the order was for closing the ghat from March 1, it was postponed in the wake of the second PU examinations. So it was decided to start the repair work from March 19. Right now, there is no information on the specific date on which the work of repairing the ghat will begin.

The news of the postponement of Agumbe Ghat repair work is being shared extensively on social media. But when the assistant deputy commissioner of Udupi district was contacted for confirmation on the same, he expressed ignorance and said that they do not have any information. Even the national highway department has not conveyed any message in this regard. So the ghat closure will continue as planned.

When SP of Udupi district was contacted to confirm the vehicle movement on the ghat, she also expressed that they do not have any information.

K Dayananda, DC of Shivamogga district said, "The national highway department has not yet started repair work. I have spoken to the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) with regard to the cutting of trees. Till the issue gets resolved, vehicle movement on the ghat will continue as usual."

The forest officials visited the area, where repair work needs to be carried out, on March 18. The area has huge trees. More area, than permitted, is being used for road. As the permission from the zonal forest wildlife department is not sought, they objected on carrying out the road repair work, it is learnt.

Agumbe gets the highest rainfall due to its forest coverage. Do not tamper with it.

Both the departments are paid from the government. This shows how lethargic these departments are only to take salaries and do nothing. If the same trees were to be cut by thieves by paying them....permission would have been given overnight.

What is the use of objecting now? All the forest cover and the trees are destroyed and gone. Nothing is left. All I can see around are only concrete buildings and sun soaked roads. Not only in Mangalore, forests have made way for building and roads all over the country. Just go and have a look at the roads from Goa to Bombay. Just a few years back, they were filled with greenery all over the place. It was such a pleasing sight. Absolutely nothing is left now. A extremely sad state of affairs. It is only destruction of forests that is going on. Nobody is bothered about planting saplings.

Forest Dept. should have objected to cutting trees for Yettinahole Project too. They are largely responsible for the devastating floods and landslides in the Western Ghats last year.

finally, the worm seems to be turning. Very happy that the forest Dept. has refused to give clearance. Yes, let us fight to protect what little is left of our tress and forest cover - development should ensure that the environment is not destroyed.

@Jossey S:Mumbai,At present better not to cut any tres.restore these old trees. When we see how the road is bieng done, gets already headache.see the edges of the road. They should have been finshed with a canal to flow off water or not any mud on the road to fall.In rainy season we will see the disaster. At the sides a barrier shoul have built.where all the money has gone.´Why noone controlled the work before the vehicles let rolldown the road.miserable work.when they cut the grown up trees ,and plant new ones ,it takes many decades to grow and give protection.
