Mangaluru/Udupi, Mar 18: In a major haul, the sleuths of Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) seized a whopping Rs 70.18 lac in cash from the residence of R M Varnekar, regional transfer officer (RTO) of Udupi who was recently caught accepting bribe.
On March 16, the ACB officials had caught Varnekar red-handed after Vignesh, whose car had caught fire during the Bengaluru air show, had complained about him. Vignesh needed documents relating to his car insurance, and when he approached the regional transport office in Udupi, Varnekar had allegedly demanded a bribe to issue the required documents. The ACB officials then nabbed Varnekar.
ACB officials thereafer also raided Varnekar's residence in Mangaluru and unearthed Rs 70.18 lac in cash.
Apart from cash, the officials also found assets like land, a house and two keys of bank lockers, ACB officials said while revealing the details in Bengaluru.
Varnekar and another Udupi RTA employee identified as Mustafa who were arrested in the case were in judicial custody. On Monday March 18, both were granted bail.
