Mangaluru: Pakistan says no to top quality arecanut of coastal region

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Mar 12: The arecanut that is produced in the district of Dakshina Kannada and coastal region of Kasargod is world famous for its top quality. However, in Pakistan, which has an annual demand of 25,000 tonnes of arecanut, there is no demand for the same that is grown in the coastal region.

During the Kargil War of 1999 the commercial trade between India and Pakistan was totally disrupted just like the present situation after the Pulwama attack. However, later, due to the efforts of the then president of CAMPCO (Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Co-operative), former minister B Nagaraja Shetty, arecanut trade between India and Pakistan got revived as he took part in the Indo-Pak Chamber of Commerce convention.

During the period of 2001-2003, when the market rate of arecanut was very low, CAMPCO was trying to expand the market. The traders of Pakistan showed interest in buying the arecanut of coastal region also. In 2003, CAMPCO had supplied approximately 1000 tonne of arecanut in two containers through ship. The cost of this deal was around Rs 16 crores. It was said that the white arecanut of coastal region gives more pleasure to the pan lovers of Pakistan.

It was expected that the export of arecanut to Pakistan will increase after India gave Pakistan the MFN (Most Favoured Nation) status. However, now the situation is entirely different.

B Nagaraja Shetty, former minister and president of CAMPCO says, "There is an annual demand of around 25,000 tonnes of areacanut in Pakistan. However, the problem is that they do not want the high quality of arecanut that is available in coastal districts. Their demand is for arecanut which is of low quality. They get low grade arecanut from countries like Indonesia and Sri Lanka. So they did not show much interest to buy arecanut from our district."

Suresh Bhandary, managing director of CAMPCO says, "The rate of arecanut collapsed after the Kargil war. So attempts to sell arecanut to Pakistan were made and it was necessary also. After that the market of arecanut got improved and the local market for the product was stable. We did not receive any demand from Pakistan also."

Its a consequence of calling for war.Everytime a war is declared, the politicians gain milage, ultimately common man who is going to suffer from it.We could see some of the comments calling for the ban on Arecanut, they should understand fact that if we from coastal area stop growing arecnut or producing beedi that is not going to make any difference in the worldwide consumption and there are alot of families who are solely depending on this income. Its not as easy to say" ban areca nut or beedi".

    Azeez,

Areca nut and Beedi rolling are not only occupation that we human beings can occupy with. Once upon a time there were total illiterate people in our society who had to take solace in Beedi Rolling. They have grown old, their children also grown up to be beedi-rolling ? Why is the government spending so much on education ? Why couldn't a deviation take place despite knowing that the trade gives so many ailments to those who are engage in it ? Aftermath affects, i.e. smoking related problems are secondary to this discussion.

Believe me, I've seen a person going nearly blind because of the tobacco dust he was subjected while beedi-rolling. Same family changed their trade to jasmine growing, they are so well-off that they kept all necessary things for their daughters' marriage forehand.

As for Areca-nut farm, if a slush paddy field can be left fallow for non-availability of worker, why can't areca nut farm be replaced with flower plants ? This trade doesn't require hard labour - elegant hands - that's all it needs.

Farm grown Prawn are more in demand even in Middle east they started to grow prawns in desert Farms and they are more tastier than normal ones.
Those who are spending lot in Arecanut farming which involved lot of water resources and fertilizers they can divert to Fish Farming less than 25% investment of Areca Nut farming and every 3 months they can harvest fish & Prawns.

I am a software engineer but still we hv acres of arecanut farm in my village.

I agree....taking care of jasmine plants is really hard.. Every fifteen days spray, loosening the mud, fertilisers, evenings remove the left over bloomed flowers, morning to sprinkle water to remove the mist from the leaves so much to do. Some seasons no yield.. House members cannot go out on holidays.. It's tough

Raju Dubai, every work needs hard work ,nothing comes from nothing. Each field has its own work.Farming too is not simple. When there are no helping hands ,one has to give up.Rolling beedis has health problems.Arecanut needs watering ,time to time have to lookafter the spraying ,and mostly no workers are available to pluck, have to store properly so that it doesnt get spoiled.and and..One cant say thats hard it is easy fishing is very risky.Shouldnt use antibiotics.many refuse to take them.well even software engineering too needs hard study isnt it?money too.?One should be ready to invest in one him interesting hobby and hard work to get good result.

We all know the harmful effect of Beedi and arecanut/pan etc, but is the elected government is helping or providing any alternative? I believe, government's efforts on eradicating poverty, and providing education is not at all sufficient. Governments run by both major parties busy in just vote bank. They are least bothered about poor.
Food, education and shelter to be on priority list but none of the government is working towards eradicating poverty and providing free education to all. We spend billion and billion on statues, image building, construction of luxury party offices, WE NEED A GOVERNMENT OR A LEADER WHO CAN PRIORITISE food, shelter and education, and push all other agenda to bottom of the list.
Can we identify who can do this, and elect that person!
On top priority basis we need to kick those leaders who talk about religion, and divide the people. All the election promises must carry a deadline. Performance evaluation to be done upon reaching the deadline by a a neutral foreign body , and if they failed to perform, they should be barred from contesting the election.

At present there is NO ACCOUNTABILITY on the part of people who govern us. They make use of our emotions and blackmail us. As long as we are divided on the basis of religion, cast, creed, etc this will happen. I like modiji's 'sabka saath sabka vikas', and I wish if he had really worked on this, unfortunately those slogans were only on books, on reality it is totally opposite.
PLEASE STOP HATING EACH OTHER ON THE BASIS OF RELIGION AND WORK FOR THE BENEFIT OF ALL, FORGETTING ALL THE DIFFERENCES CREATED BY THESE POLITICIANS.

We Indians are the biggest hypocrites in the world. We want to go at war with Pak and we also want them to buy out product at a higher rate than that is available in other Asian countries. First of all, due to lack of labour, our paddy fields were transformed into Areca farms. All low class workers of Kerala ended up in foreign countries working as bonded labours. Now lament for what ?

Learn from your experience people, Grow your food for subsistence - don't buy, don't sell nor export. Ask Ramar Pillai for petrol too.

It appears to me that the loss of exports is a fallout of the Pulwama episode.

No rocket science needed here. Every fight will have ongoing consequences.

Regardless, for the long-term future, the coastal farmers need to replace areca with coconuts.

Langoolji, to export fenny you both have to settle down in Goa.. Our coastal region is good in preparing " goku country". Now you both decide which one will be more easier to export?? Accordingly settle down 😆😆😆😆 (please consult Vijay malllya for recipes)

It is this same arecanut that saved many a catholic 'clans' from tippu captivity. Since tippu army was heavily dependent on chewing this product. It is said that due to bribing arecanut many clans were saved who had vast tracks of this plantations.
