New Delhi: Former Defence Minister George Fernandes passes away at 88

Daijiworld Media Network - New Delhi

New Delhi, Jan 29: Former Defence Minister George Fernandes, long-time socialist and a trade unionist, who fought the Congress all his life died on Tuesday after prolonged illness. He was 88.

Fernandes, who was suffering from Alzheimer's disease, has been out of the public eye and has been bed-ridden for more than eight years, family sources said.

He had a cold and cough and was taken to the Max Hospital in Saket by his wife, Liela Fernandes, earlier in the day, when doctors said that the veteran leader was already dead.

His son, who lives in New York, is expected back in a day or two, after which the funeral will take place, the sources said.

Fernandes, a long-time socialist, rose to political prominence when he led the Bombay Taxi Unions Association and defeated "uncrowned king of Bombay" S.K. Patil, a Congress heavy-weight in the 1967 general election.

A fire-brand and hardworking Fernandes, only 37 then, campaigned tirelessly, covering large swathes of the constituency with his workers. And when the results were declared, he unseated the 'king' with 48.5 per cent of the votes.

Fernandes later joined the Janata Dal. He served as Railways Minister in the V.P. Singh government from 1989 to 1990. He was instrumental in setting up the Konkan Railway project, connecting Mangalore and Bombay.

In 1994, Fernandes formed the Samata Party, which later allied with the Bharatiya Janata Party. He was appointed convenor of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and served as the Defence Minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government for two terms, between 1998 and 2004.

His term was eventful as it witnessed the Kargil war and Pokhran test.

A native of Mangaluru, George Fernandes rose to fame as an anti-Emergency crusader and civil rights activists and served as a Union Minister in the Janata Party government headed by Morarji Desai that came to power in 1977 to 1980.

He stepped down as the Defence Minister in 2004 after ‘coffin gate’ broke out.

He will be remembered as the son of the soil who materialized konkan rail for our coast....despite hurdles put by our private bus lobby..
he also opposed tooth and nail Indira Gandhi during the dictatorial period of emergency....If he was alive today, he would have led JD(U) and been automatic choice for PM from the secular front...

RIP George Fernandes. You made our mangalore nearer to Mumbai because of the Konkan Railway. People who had forgotton their ancestral land started acquiring it and built nice bungalows. Their weekends were spent in konkan looking after their elderly parents and returning to mumbai, monday morning for ther jobs. The konkan railway route looks pleasant with green fields, forests and beautiful villas, and houses. We and our children enjoy the train journey to mangalore. Thanks a lot. Good Lord bless his soul and protest and guide his family.

George Fernandes, who went underground during the Emergency, was a nightmare for the Indira Gandhi government. The government desperately wanted him behind the bars and turned to his two comrades-in-arms – his brother Lawrence and Kannada actress-friend Snehalata Reddy – for his whereabouts. However, they did not betray him despite being subjected to third-degree torture. The lead actress in the award-winning Kannada film 'Samskara' and the brother were tortured for months but did not utter about George's possible hideouts. George, the fiery socialist, was the hero of the 1974 railway strikes and the government knew he could organise people against the Emergency.

George Fernandes is well-known as a trade union leader, for his fight against Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi and later as minister at the Centre.
Not much is known about his joining a seminary to become a Catholic priest and leaving it to go to Bombay and get involved in trade union work under the mentorship of A. D’Mellow after whom Frere Road in downtown Bombay is now renamed.
I met and interviewed George in 1970 when he was operating from a pokey office on the then Frere Road where his labour office and coop bank was located for a story for the Christmas issue of the Illustrated Weekly of India (now defunct) which under the editorship of Kushwant Singh (now late) was focussing on Indian communities. I was writing the cover story on Mangalorean Catholics – George being one of its leading lights with a Pan-India image.
Then I wrote on Mangalorean “Coods”, sort of transit houses for those looking for jobs in Bombay and working on ships (between sailings). I am not sure if George had a formal membership of the one located near Lions Gate in south Bombay. But after his tiring trade union work he would often go to this Cood (St. Paul’s – over a century old) and have a simple lunch and a quick nap (sleeping on the ground or on the “trunks” - steel suitcases - that lined the walls) before resuming his afternoon grind.

Accept our heartfelt condolences on the sad demise of George. Our fond memories go back to the 40's during our school days at St. Aloysius. He took active part in the Freedom Movement of the Country. George struggled all his life for the cause of less privileged, downtrodden and oppressed. When he was the Union Minister for Defence he addressed the members of the Gentlemen Sodality at the Bishop's House and also members of the CASK at St. Aloysius College Hall.

The lion of canara that rose to prominence in Indian politics and made huge contributions to our nation. A giant leader and a giant politician close trust worthy friend of Vajpayjee and a tall leader from our tulunadu.

I had a chance to meet him in Delhi and when I wanted to meet the industries minister he helped me get an appointment and his down to earth profile and simplicity floored me completely.
A great human being and a great politician who is a true and fearless patriot of India.

Pakistan/China were scared of him when he was defence minister and many occasions he was about pounce on Pakistan for its terrorist activities, however he was restrained due to political reasons.
I salute him for his bravery and for his contributions to our country- Konkan Railway, Sea bird naval base in Karwar and many other developments to help the poor made him a mass leader,

The shocking news of the sad demise of George Fernandes, Former Defence Minister has brought grief and sorrow not only for his near & dear ones but also to the nation at large. He fought for the emancipation of the down-trodden through the Trade Union Movement through-out his life. He worked for the up-liftment of the down-trodden, sick & poor by organizing, educating and empowering the oppressed to fight for and obtain justice. He was leading in the field of Trade Union, Social, Economic & Political fields. He was instrumental in contributing his outstanding services to many Social, religious and cultural institutions. He was primarily responsible to get rid of the mandatory provision of Probate for Christian Will. His valued contribution as the Architect of the Konkan Railway will always be remembered with gratitude by the people of the Konkan region.
He was also of immense help when the Xavier Educational Trust was started in the year 1984 which has been serving the less fortunate youth of the Society through Xavier Industrial Training Centre.

Heartfelt condolences to his brothers Micky, Paul, Louie, Ritchie & bereaved members of the family.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.

    JJV Fernandes
    Hon. Chairman
    Xavier Educational Trust, Mangalore

Parties least matter while the actual performers are members working for it. In whichever party he had been, Mr. George Fernandes was always sincere, honest, hardworking and dedicated to his vision and assignments. As for me, I always remember and talk about him with my co-passengers whenever I travel by train through Konkan railway.

Rest in peace Sir George. The entire coastal towns and cities remain indebted to the Konkan railway line you got in. Our generation will never forget when we had to go all the way to Shornur junction in Kerala, to go to Mumbai or other North Indian states.

But then again, as a whole you were one politician that every other politician needs to learn from.

Although I have utter disdain for the present day politicians, George Fernandes stands apart from the crowd. I might not agree with all his policies but his intentions were never in doubt. He always had the interest of the nation at heart and without an iota of doubt, he was an extremely patriotic Indian. A very principled person - a rarity in Indian politics these days - George will go down in history as a valiant and intrepid person who stood for values and principles. It is extremely difficult to find someone like him these days.
