Mangaluru, Jan 25: The Customs Commissionerate, Mangaluru commemorated International Customs Day at New Customs Office on Friday, January 25.
Dr B M Hegde, distinguished physician and Padmabhushan awardee inaugurated the event by lighting the lamp. N V Hegde, chancellor, Nitte University attended as guest of honour. Imamuddin Ahamad (IRS) commissioner, Customs Commissionerate, Mangaluru presided over the programme.
In his inaugural speech, BM Hegde said, “I congratulate the Customs Commissionerate, Mangaluru for their good work and achievements in past years. Today, people have started to experience the friendly attitude from customs officers and the customs offices have become more modern and technically advanced. This practice will help the commissionerate to reach a higher level. At the same time, the crooks should be caught and severely punished.”
In his speech N V Hegde said, “As a frequent traveller, I have experienced the service from customs department in airport which was very friendly and polite. Same time in the matter of import and export, the Customs Commissionerate of Mangaluru are rendering appreciable service. It is their duty to stop the business which is against the law. It is our duty to help them catch the illegal trade. As of now Mangaluru Airport still stands number one for its service. As per my knowledge, Mangaluru Customs department already completed its target and still it is very aggressively collecting duty which is directed by law of our land. Same time my kind request to the Customs Department is to avoid the duty on medical machineries. Otherwise a part of this duty will have to be borne by poor patients and it’s a burden on them.”
In his presidential speech, Imamuddin Ahmad said, "This year we are celebrating the International Customs Day with the theme of smartborders for seamless trade, travel and transport. As per this theme, Indian Customs is trying to use more technical help for its operation. Applying new technologies in our operations is very easy for us to communicate and coordinate with the various customs offices all over the globe. We are providing online facilities to ease the formalities of import and export. By this the trades will get more clarity and it helps smoothening their business. We have already simplified customs formalities which is helping in international trade and by this our import and export activities are increased throughout the borders.
“Mangaluru customs is in forefront in using technology and known for its friendly service. We are one of the leading Commissionerate which is preventing smuggling via airport and seaport. Having a good reputation in service, Mangaluru Customs Commissionerate is undertaking many projects,” Ahmad said.
