Banker, AAP leader Meera Sanyal loses cancer battle, dies at 57

Mumbai, Jan 11 : (The Hindu) : Aam Adami Party (AAP) leader Meera Sanyal succumbed to a prolonged battle with cancer on Friday. She was 57 and was survived by her husband and two children.

A former banker, she entered politics in 2009 when she contested the Lok Sabha polls as an independent from Mumbai south constituency.

In the wake of the India Against Corruption movement that erupted across the country in 2011-12, Sanyal joined it and later became a part of AAP, formed by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejariwal.

She contested the 2014 LS election as an AAP candidate from Mumbai south where she won more than 40000 votes and finished fourth. She was part of AAP's Economic Policy Wing.

"Extremely sad to hear this. No words to explain," tweeted Kejariwal reacting to the news her death.

"She was a great source of energy and her inputs helped the party across the country as well as in Maharashtra," said Ruben Mascarenhan, National Joint Secretary, AAP.

    Sanyal was the India chief of the Royal Bank of Scotland when she decided to make the unusual decision to plunge into alternative politics. She saw the two principal national parties, the Congress and BJP, as being responsible for the country’s woes and was determined to chart a separate course.

    Apli Mumbai, the citizen's group she founded, was also in the forefront of an important campaign to utilise land owned by the Mumbai Port Trust for public purposes. The Eastern Waterfront, as the area is called, is dotted with derelict warehouses and disused factories and Apli Mumbai had prepared a plan to create parks, public leisure centers and education and cultural hubs on the land instead of merely farming it out to private builders for housing.

    Sanyal also wrote a book last year, The Big Reverse: How Demonetization Knocked India Out, critiquing the move and calling it an ‘unmitigated disaster.’

    She wrote;
    Clearly, therefore, Demonetisation failed in its second big goal — eradication of corruption. If anything, the new 2,000 notes made it simpler for corrupt officials to take and stash away larger bribes, compounding the problem for ordinary Indians.
    The famous Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu is reputed to have said: ‘Governing a great nation is like cooking a small fish – too much handling will spoil it.’
    The economic impact of demonetisation shows the truth of this statement. It was a totally unnecessary step which extracted a very high cost.
    Instead of taking much-needed steps to make it easier to do business in India, the government paralysed businesses with the chaotic demonetisation.
    Since they refused to admit the blow that the economy had suffered due to demonetisation and remained in complete denial, they also could not take corrective actions to revive the economy. This state of denial, therefore, compounded one error with another, leading to a much slower recovery than would otherwise have been possible.

    India needed Smart..dynamic.. Tall ..firebrand and elegant personalities and character of Mrs: Meera Sanyal..we lost her.
    May God give you strength to withstand this great Tragedy..and Loss.

    A great soul departed fighting against the cancerous corruption. Being a banker, I recollect her desperate efforts when Congress was ceaselessly amassing wealth by looting the country.
