Mangaluru, Jan 9: It is usual to see price rises of grocery and essential commodities during festivals. Shortage of agricultural produce and increased demand take prices beyond the reach of common man.
The prices of fruits and vegetables have been rising in markets in Bengaluru, Mangaluru and throughout state. Those who are preparing to celebrate Sankranti festival are facing the heat.
Coconuts in Mangaluru are priced at around Rs 30. Tomato prices are shooting up as there is short supply from Mysuru, Mandya, Davanagere, Chikkaballapur, Kolar and other places. There is an increase of up to 30% in prices. The winter climate has affected the produce.
While tender coconuts are available in Bengaluru for about 20 rupee, they are priced at Rs 35 in Mangaluru.
The widening gap between demand and supply are likely to increase the prices of flowers also.
The prices of fish are not behind. King fish is being sold in Mangaluru at Rs 600 per kg. Mutton prices have reached Rs 450 per kg.
