Mangaluru, Dec 19: The Christmas and New Year season has begun. This is the time people visit their native places or other destinations, to make the best use of holidays to offices and schools.

Ever enthusiastic to milk every opportunity to increase their earnings, private bus operators have sensed that this is the best time for them to strike it rich. They have affected a four-fold increase in the bus fare.

In the past, the bus owners had increased fares on the occasions of Dasara, Deepavali, Vinayaka Chaturthi etc by trebling them. Now they have gone a step further. 

Normally, private buses charge about Rs 800 between the city and Bengaluru. But it is said that people booking tickets online between Bengaluru and city on December 22 are being asked to pay Rs 3,450, which is way too high and beyond reasoning.

    Well, Airlines have jacked up the price to Mangalore since the flooding of ghat section. The minimum price itself is double the price you would pay to travel to Chennai from Bangalore. In this particular case, Govt did intervene, but that still did not affect the pricing big time.
    We are also perfectly fine with so called budget airlines make us pay through the nose, as much as Jet Airways or full fledge service airlines charge.
    Although I am not supporting the price increase by private bus operators, it is now more or less a norm everywhere to adjust the pricing based on demand. Uber too does it.
    People in Bangalore from DK are best advised to connect and start car pooling during seasonal rush, and rein in on the demand. That is the best way to fight this artificial price rise purely to fleece the customer who wants to take some time off in his hometown.

    Hope Govt Authorities take a note of this and cap the fare hike so that its fair to all wanting to travel.
    Until then best is to drive down in your own vehicle or do a car pool/pool and hire cabs, Ola/Uber. I guess this may be a cheaper option available

    Any idea how is the current road conditions between Blore and Mlore ? Hope Shiradi Ghat and rest of the road drive is smooth

    I travel regularly on the Mangalore-Mumbai route and I have travelled by buses of all companies but I would unhesitatingly say that the KSRTC buses are the best on this route. Their Airavat Club Class buses are simply superb and have very comfortable seats. I can vouch for the punctuality of the KSRTC buses and unlike the private carriers, their staff are extremely courteous. Private carriers like SRS Travels boast of Scania Volvo buses in their fleet but I would like to caution all readers that the seats on these buses are totally uncomfortable. The head can be placed on the head rest but there is nothing to support the neck as a result of which by the time you arrive at your destination, the neck starts to pain. It is a real pain to travel by SRS Travels Scania Volvo buses. And the less said about their arrogant staff, the better.

    It is really shocking news and hard to digest. There should be a limit to increase the fare. But private bus operators are playing with the emotions of the passenger. Their idea is to discourage the people from attending festivals back home. If anybody wants to come and attend, pay our stipulated fare and travel. Otherwise no way. This is somewhat beyond anybody's imagination. But no department, officials, authorities to control this unbelievable fare increase during festive season. Many times aired our grievances in the past but no one listen and take action against exorbitant fare increase and trend will continue. Private bus operators are the kings. They can do anything at their own discretion, will and fancy. No one can question them. This is ridiculous. Can any authorities,department,officials interfere in this sensitive issue and put a full stop for this arbitrary fare increase in the best interest of the people, who are willing to come to meet their kith and kin during festive season.

    This is not something new. It has been going on for years but on a smaller scale.
    The Bombay / Mangalore sector is also affected by the holiday rush. Earlier it was only Bombay / Goa routes that the rates doubled or trebled for a long weekend or the festival holidays. Now all operators have learnt the trick to fleece the people for any destination. At other times the buses don't run to full capacity and the operators experience heavy losses. That's why I think they cover up the losses this way. A Volvo or Scania bus comes out of the garage with a bill of fifty thousand or a lakh rupees. It's expensive no doubt but there should be a limit to overcharging.

    I have been in Bangalore for the past 15 years, even when our dear yeddy was ruling. Even that time the bus operators were the same. Perhaps they take sides as per the ruling party. Which means even that must be investigated. I mean the BJP scam

    Please travel by KSRTC ... Very reasonable rates, even during peak season / weekends, they increase the dates very normally. I travel often between Bangalore and Mangalore, use their Air Awaat Club Class, have not paid over Rs. 850/- so far, even during their Christmas / new year rates are under Rs. 1100/- on this route. They cover the distance of 350 kms around 7-8 hours, which is the average it would take me to go by air, given the chaotic traffic in Bangalore City. Their Volvo / Scania Multi Axel buses are very comfortable with comfortable seating and leg room. Staff are very courteous. Other than Ballal (now out of service) rest of the private Bus operator's are a big Mafia, rude driver's and conductor's, erratic service, poorly maintained buses, their only concern is maximum profit. Unfortunately the Railway's have limitations in running more train's, also the Bus owner's lobby with strong Political connection's have a role to play.

    Even Mumbai to mangalure by bus in sleeper coach is raised to rs 4000/to 5000/ in Christmas holiday season.Few comments are correctly says there is no regulation and law on price and fare control of private buses. some one well said in our country some persons is try to make money with exploiting the situation of human needs.
    secondly when the private bus met with accidents and the causalities are compensated by government not by the private buses owners. like travel insurance for air travelers should also extend to private bus travelers. The government should specify the luxury buses, super luxury buses and ordinary buses and fix its fare(rate per Km).
    but in this country either private bus owners having big lobby with government, or minister and mp mlas owing private travel buses who never give benefit to travelers .

    Whole country is looting the middle / working class and the poor in all possible ways then why these private bus operators are to be different.

    They have been looting the public for decades and no action ever has been taken by the authorities and all complaints will end up at the deaf ears. Only God has to help the poor and middle class in this country.

    The whole country is reeking of corruption. Indians have become bolder as they have come to know that nothing will happen to them even if they cheat openly!
    God knows what is going to happen. Even the Congress is announcing that they are going to waive all farm loans! Difficult times ahead.
    Every other Indian is trying to loot his countrymen. I feel British were much better.

    Well said ... duration is maximum 1 hour.

    However, ONLY the rich can afford it. How about the middle class? For all (irrespective of rich or middle class), 1 hour duration is STILL THE SAME. They wouldn't mind waiting.

    And yet there are some who despite booking well in advance are even most likely to miss the bus for somebody else's fault.......very much happening in our country.

    Blame it squarely on the Railways for not increasing the trains well in time. The war between the bus operators and the Railways has been an old one ...each one wanting to break the back of another for a very long time now. If the Government has it's way, they should cancel the license of these fleecing operators...but every single person receives their kickbacks, directly or indirectly. That is the norm of the day. Everything in India is chaltha hai chalatha hai attitude.
