Mangalore, Dec 11: An old house belonging to Maheshchandra, located on K C Road in Kudroli in the city, was gutted on the night of Wednesday December 10. Electrical short-circuit is thought to be the reason behind the tragedy.
When fire was sighted at about 7 pm, Maheshchandra's wife Usha and a work maid named Lakshmi were present in the house. Mahesh, who runs a travel agency in the city, was in the office, while his son Nitin was in a neighbouring house. Both the women rushed outside immediately and succeeded in bringing out the gas cylinder and some other goods from the house before the fire spread.
The fire that was first seen in the first floor of the house soon engulfed the entire roof. Fire brigade personnel were assisted by locals in extinguishing the flames. In addition to the roof of the house, cots, alimirahs and wooden furniture were burnt down in the fire. Policemen of Bunder police station looked after security. The extent of loss is yet to be estimated.
