Mangaluru, Dec 15: ACP Mangaluru central division Bhaskar V B inaugurated programme on 'Youth participation in prevention of crime' on the occasion of crime prevention month here at School of Social work Roshni Nilaya on Saturday, December 15.
The programme was jointly organised by Department of Criminology Roshni Nilaya, Mangaluru City Commissionarate, Mangaluru South Police station and Cyber Crime Police station.
The programme started with students enacting issues due to drug abuse and adverse impacts due to rash driving.
Speaking on the occasion, ACP Bhaskar V B said, "Students have put up a meaningful play on drug abuse, rash driving and importance of wearing helmet. Youngsters are seen breaking traffic rules, especially helmet rule. In case if we stop them and impose fine, police become villains.”
"We have deep concern about youth, so we have to stop them and impose fine as a preventive measure, so that they don’t repeat mistakes. We are also worried that Mangaluru will become hub of drugs where students are increasingly becoming the victims of drugs. Many petty shops are seen selling drugs close to the institutions. Drug seller will become a rich man where as drug consumer will turn into a beggar and even the family has to suffer. We should not fall prey to drugs and start thinking about our family,” he advised.
Speaking about substance abuse, Consultant Psychiatrist Dr Caroline P D’Souza said, "Youngsters succumb to substance abuse because of depression and also being unable to handle stress. Those who are into substance abuse, there is a change in their behaviour and daily routine, lot of symptoms can be seen like mood swings, like to be left alone, school performance come down drastically and many more. Substance abuse will have impact on their day to day life such as lack of memory, no confidence, anxiety, phobia, lack of sleep, stress. In order to come out of it they can go into individual therapy, medications, detoxify, read books and involve in activities which keeps you more relaxed.”
Police Inspector Cyber Crime Police Station, Savithra Tej said," Several innocent people are becoming victims of cyber crime. Students have social media accounts where they upload photos and the photos will later be morphed and blackmailing starts. We need to be aware while posting photos in social media,” he said.
"There are various other frauds such as bank frauds, job frauds, gift frauds and many more and we see people are becoming easy victims to it and losing lacs of money. Bank never calls you to ask ATM number but we are easily fooled and give our personal details to the caller and get trapped and end up losing money,” said Savithra Tej.
"We should be extra careful in taking precautionary methods and avoid falling prey to the frauds,” said Savithra Tej.
Diana Bangera compered the event and welcomed the gathering.
Inspector Urwa Police Station K M Shareef, Inspector Economic and Narcotic Crime police station Ramakrishna, principal of Roshni Nilaya Juliet C J, registrar evaluation L N Bhat, HOD Department of Criminology Sarik Ankitha were present.
