Udupi, Dec 14: “A proposal requesting for traffic signals in NH 66 Ambalpady, Katpadi and Santhekatte junctions has been sent to national highway authority,” said superintendent of police (SP) Laxman Nimbargi. He was speaking in the SP office during phone-in programme on Friday December 14.

“Traffic problem on these three junctions is acute. As there is no dual path traffic on service road, controlling traffic density is also difficult. Several complaints about it are being received from people. There is provision for traffic signals on NH 66 on special requests,” he said.

Traffic density in Udupi

“Auto rickshaws are being parked on main road in front of municipal council office causing problems to people. Local tourist vehicles are being parked in public parking place in front of KSRTC bus stand,” complained a caller. The SP said that suitable action will be taken after verification.

There were complaints that buses stop farther than the designated place at Eshwarnagar bus stop, Manipal. The SP assured of suitable action. A caller complained that trash is being scattered in Thenkanidiyoor which may spread epidemic. “Vehicles are driven recklessly and too fast on Malpe-Padukere road,” said a caller.

Another caller said that buses ply without permit in Gangolli and private buses do not go to Gangolli and from Gangolli to Kundapur in the evenings. “While the permit is in one person’s name, the owner is somebody else,” said a complainant. The SP said that RTO will be asked to verify permits.

A caller requested to include Hattiangady in Kundapur police station limits. The SP said that it should happen on government level and the district administration should be requested for it.

A person complained that a crematorium by Gangolli grama panchayat is reserved for a particular community and a public board is removed. The SP said that the matter will be brought to the notice of Tahasildar and concerned officials for action.

There were complaints that a pet dog in Nittur takes away footwear kept outside in the neighborhood.

Cases registered from November 23

During the programme the SP stated that seven cases of Matka were registered and eight suspects arrested in this regard. Signals are not 100 % remedy on N H 66. First of all, the highway was not scientifically formed despite protests from the public. Only in India we see highways passing through area inhabited by people as opposed to International and safety standards. It is nothing but poor planning and rampant corruption. After widening of highway so many innocent people, like pedestrians, 2 wheeler riders, motorists have died.

Just to give you an idea, at the Santhekatte junction near Kallianpur, 2 service roads on either side of the main carriage, road leading to Kallianpur-Kemmannu are joining the highway. It is a big and dangerous junction with heavy traffic. So many accidents have taken place here. There is an urgent need of a flyover here so that congestion, accidents etc. can be avoided. Added to the woes is the Sunday weekly market where hawkers sit on the service road divider and scatter the items for sale on the service road. One can't dream of driving on this road at least till 12.00 noon on Sundays. So many people residing around that area are inconvenienced as they can't take out their vehicles. Nobody is bothered to take the corrective action despite complaints. The only beneficiary is City Municipality of Udupi. It is authorizing such hawkers to sell by charging fees (sunka) instead of vacating them and freeing up the road for use of the general public.

Apart from that, heavy vehicles like trucks, tankers and two wheelers are driven on the fast track obstructing free movement of traffic and also the need to change lanes frequently to overtake. Barricades at the junctions are placed dangerously without any lights.

The concerned authorities should take into account first safety of the people and also see that traffic rules are adhered by all motorists. Unless there is fear discipline will be difficult. The district administration, municipality and police department should liaise and solve the problems in the best possible manner.

Very good move. This type of signal light and humps only can control our traffic especially city and service bus including Fish transportation trucks.
