India jumps 23 spots on World Bank's 'ease of doing business' index, ranks 77

New Delhi/Washington, Oct 31 (PTI): India has jumped 23 places to the 77th position in the World Bank's 'ease of doing business' ranking released Wednesday, a development that could help the country attract more foreign investments.

India was ranked 100th in the World Bank's Doing Business Report last year.

The ranking comes as a shot in the arm for the Narendra Modi government which faces strong dissenting voices from opposition parties ahead of the general elections next year.

In its annual report 'Doing Business' 2019 report, World Bank said India improved on six of the 10 parameters relating to starting and doing business in a country.

These parameters include ease of starting a business, construction permits, getting electricity, getting credit, paying taxes, trade across borders, enforcing contracts and resolving insolvency.

India was ranked at the 142nd position among 190 nations when the Modi government came to power in 2014.

It rose to 100th spot in the last ranking from the 131st rank in the previous year.

New Zealand topped the list of 190 countries in ease of doing business, followed by Singapore, Denmark, and Hong Kong.

The United States is placed eight and China has been ranked 46th. Neighbouring Pakistan is placed at 136. World Bank put India among the top 10 economies to make the most improvements.

Reading some of the comments makes me realize time and again why india will remain a third world hell hole. Societies prosper and progress through industrialization not agrarianism. We need many more businesses and a robust entrepreneurial culture like China to create jobs for a large population.

    Rahul,

"Societies prosper and progress through industrialization not agrarianism"

But in India, businessmen make money and flee, send foreigners back to India to copy them. What was wrong if Ni-Mo and Choksey had continued to do business in India ? Why do we need foreign investments ? Why they had to make Antigua richer out of us Indians' money ?

Which government allowed Anderson to flee after killing around 3000 Indians?. Do you think if by putting Mallya or Nirav in jail, India will get money lost through the scam. Mallyas loans were obtained at the time of UPA in Power.5

For every choksi and nirav modi there is also shiv Nadar and Anand Mahindra. If you make a blanket statement that businessmen are bad what about our rogue politicians especially the ultra corrupt and shameless gandhi dynasty. The very fact that large section of southern Karnataka runs hippety skip to capitalist gulf and other Industrialized states shows that communism and socialism is a force. Humans are inherently materialistic and an think for themselves. Every disruption creates not eliminates jobs. World transitioned from Hunter gatherer to Agrarian to industrial society. India cannot afford to remain backward because of whims of one socialists

If you feel we do not need foreign investments then by the same logic we do not need foreign migration either. Maybe all keralites and South karanatka people should leave gulf en masse and come back to India. We have already lost the race to east Asia thanks to disastrous socialist policies of nehru dynasty and communist lobby.

It appears that the Gujju-bhai and his supporters believe that large-scale industrialization is what India needs to pursue...
    ... and become another China.

That is all packaged under the slogan of "MACK in India" by the Gujju-bhai.

But one needs to be very careful. AI and Robotics have begun to replace factory workers. USA and other major importers of mnufactured goods from others (like China) can make them with very low costs.

So, any large-scale industrialization efforts in India with a view to exports are likely to be investments with no returns!

Similarly, the large-scale industrialization efforts will not translate into larger employment. Robots will do all the work - with no pay, no strikes, and no #MeToo issues!

The ranking is based on many factors - all of which fed by sources within India. So the neutrality of the report can be questioned.

But the ranking, done solely for the benefit of potential investors, does not mean much to an investor.

The investor looks for maximum returns, with many other favourable conditions (not covered by the report): cost of labour, labour union activism, currency exchange rate, easy/quick legal processes, etc, etc.

The proof of the pudding here is getting greater investment. But that is not visible so far.

Instead, reverse seems to be true! According to reports, FDI is reducing, while outflows are double of inflows!

Under previous Governments For foreign companies it was difficult to take (Business earnings) money out of India. Present Government is encouraging every one to take foreign exchange to Developed countries. That made ease of doing business in India and it will wipe out middle class and generate more Billionaires and Lower income persons

People who doesn’t know the meaning of “Ease of Doing business” Ranking is giving credit to Modi.....

First try to understand what is this ranking all about....

It’s nothing but A Country which usually has simpler, regulations for businesses and stronger protections of property rights.

During UPA Modi was against 49% FDI, but we all know Modi is know for U Turn, this cabinet has approved 100 percent FDI....Modi has the luxury of absolute majority.....

100% FDI was the main reason for this jump....then nothing else....if the opposition and UPA allies had been not opposed FDI then this jump would have been long back.....

    You are wrong
All of the statue except the bronze cladding on the statue is by China as we don't have a single Bronze foundry in India due to 65 years of misrule by Congee
Rafael jets are made in France but later the spare parts are made in India
In Bullet train too thee will be technology transfer . Second bullet train will be 100% Indian

"we don't have a single Bronze foundry in India due to 65 years of misrule by Congee " ?????

Who asked Modi to apply bronze technology on the statue ?? Sardar Patel personally, or you ?? What is the achievement after all by installing such a statue to which tax-payers' money has to be drained ?

Nevertheless, my original question was, did the statue give food to a hungry Indian ??

    SK,

Modi went after 'Made in Italy' copters, to find out SG's role in it and to establish that its not Thyagis but Congress leaders who benefited out of it, through his entire (almost now) term at the center. Till four and half years he could not prove a dime. Instead, he is falling in the pit he dug himself by Rafale deal.

No, we Indians don't want 'Made in Italy' nor 'France, China, Japan' - we want the Black money brought in and distributed as Modi gave us dreams.

Can you bring this into reality ??

Please explain how the number jumping on WB's index helps common man ?

A gas cylinder could be purchased @ Rs. 300/- when the index read 142. But when it reads 77, the cost of the cylinder is Rs. 900/- Is this Modi's achievement you are applauding ?

Regarding Gas cylinder you are wrong because there is Subsidy direct debit transfer and thus price is much lesser although little higher than that was 5 here's back
What's it for common man are as follows
1.Orher day I met a Security guard working in a Media firm .He says previously every time I go to get for PCC ( Police clearance certificate) I had to spend RS 2000 bribe .Now as Modi has introduced CTNS it's fast and no bribe to be given everything online
2.I met one lady who used to say 5 years back no ration in Ration shops .Now wheat sugar are available dispersed throughout Aadhar card. Also 5 crore LPG connection has been given
3.Above all when ease of doing business is better more and more FDI ,more companies more jobs for poor .Better economy

Kamath, The ease of doing business aptly applies to Anil Ambani.... The Rafael deal was routed through him in spite of his declaring Bankruptcy , without any technical know how. after sidelining the Indian company H.A.L.. So in relative terms this is what is meant by Ease of doing business...
