Puttur: Assault case - absconding accused arrested after 17 years

Puttur, Sep 25: The police personnel of the town station here have succeeded in arresting a person, who happens to be an accused in a 17-year-old case of assault. The accused, identified as Muhammed Sigbath, had been evading arrest. The assault had happened at Gurumpunaru in Bannur village here.

Reportedly, the accused had evaded arrest by going abroad and staying in Dubai since the last 16 years. The police were waiting for him at Bengaluru airport when he alighted from a flight from Dubai on Saturday, September 22.

On August 9, 2001, Sheikh Razack Saheb from Gurumpunaru, Bannur, had been invited to help in negotiations relating to a dispute over marriage of Mumtaz, daughter of his wife's uncle. During the negotiations, heated discussions took place, during which Muhammed Sigbath along with several others had attacked Sheikh Razack Saheb. On his arrival back from Dubai, the police arrested Sigbath and produced him in the court here.
