Mangaluru Sep 24: Former minister Ramanath Rai, on behalf of Congress party, opposed the merger of Vijaya Bank with Dena Bank and Bank of Baroda, which are under loss.

Addressing media here on Monday September 24, Ramanath Rai said," NDA government has made a move to merge Vijaya Bank, Dena Bank and Bank of Baroda. Vijaya Bank has vast history of 87 years which is under profit while Dena Bank and Bank of Baroda are in loss. Vijaya Bank belongs to our district which was started by Attavar Balakrishna Shetty, A B Shetty and Sundaram Shetty. Sundaram Shetty was the founder president of Vijaya Bank,”

“During its initial days, Vijaya Bank was in bad condition. It was the employees of Vijaya Bank, who came to the rescue by rejecting to take their salaries. Indira Gandhi nationalised the banks which helped the poor to avail the bank facilities. UPA government had waived farmers’ loans to the tune of Rs 72,000 crore. On the other hand, NDA government had waived loans of industrialists and rich men,” he added.

"Earlier many banks were merged with State Bank of India. Other bank mergers also took place including that of Punjab National Bank. Yet the economic conditions of these banks remain the same. When the banks were nationalised, it helped the customers and employees of the banks. If the banks are merged then it is difficult for customers and employees of the banks,” he informed.

He further said, "BJP MP and MLAs are silent on this issue. NDA government has always been with industrialists, investors and does not think about common people. BJP is confident that it can gain votes in the name of religion and caste,”

Ramanath Rai urged people of the district to oppose the move by NDA government to merge Vijaya Bank with Dena Bank and Bank of Baroda.

Chief whip of MCC Shashidhar Hegde, mayor Bhaskar Moily, former mayor Kavitha Sanil and others were present.

People of Karnataka must oppose this bid by Northies Jetley and team as Kannadigas keeping aside our party affiliations or political differences.
When it affects Karnataka, it not only affects Congress or JDS but to all Kannadigas.
When HAL kept out, Karnataka lost opportunities for many Kannadigas.
When Airshow tried to shift from Bangaluru to UP, Karnataka would have affected.
Politically let us belong to parties, but when development/opportunity is denied to our generation, at least let us come together and fight. Why not with our own too.

Its the great step taken against merger of Vijaya Bank. The banks originated from Karnataka should not be allowed to merge and put the customer in trouble. People of Karnataka are very happy with these banks, the banks are doing great and why is the necessity to merger, to take care of the banks for their failure in success?

I request all the people of Karnataka should join and fight for the right to allowing these banks continue their services like before.

People are sitting here only for political reasons.Ivan D'Souza is first among the lot to raise the objection for the merger. In principle ,I appreciate their concern and love for the bunt community and late A B Shetty and MSR Shetty in particular. My partinent question is whether the opposition for merger of Vijaya Bank is for political reasons or for love for DK,Tulu,Bunt people. If it is purely for later , why no one has supported the cause of naming the road from LHH road to Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty road even after local admnistratiin accorded permission and stalled the proposal when communal elements infiltrated the scenario.Now. Govt has taken a decision for merging the Vijaya Bank, it will happen unless something happens but not for present opposition from a politically motivated group.Vijayees have seized. The matter and lodged strong objection for merging the Vijaya Bank. We wish for the best.

Are you opposing it for political reasons? do you have solution for banks' pathetic situation ? Govt trying to revitalize them and make them strong by reducing MPA's and make profitable. Enough of your decades of misusing financial institutions which brought them to their current situations. Instead of opposing suggest some solutions to achieve this goal. I bet you do not have any! Better shut up .

The state of Karnataka, particularly the region comprising the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, is called the cradle of banking in India. This is because seven of the country's leading banks, Canara Bank, Syndicate Bank, Corporation Bank, Vijaya Bank, Karnataka Bank, Vysya Bank and the State Bank of Mysore originated from this state. The first five in the above list of banks were established in the districts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada. These districts have one among the best distribution of banks in India - a branch for every 500 persons.Between 1880 and 1935, 22 banks were established in coastal Karnataka, nine of them in the city of Mangalore.
Losses of public sector banks have touched a staggering Rs 87,370 crore during the financial year ended on March 31, 2018, with fraud-hit Punjab National Bank leading the pack as the biggest loss-maker. Of the 21 state-owned banks, only two banks, Indian Bank and Vijaya Bank, posted profits during 2017-18.
Indian Bank posted the highest profit of Rs 1,259 crore and Vijaya Bank's profit was Rs 727 crore during the fiscal year. The largest quarterly losses have been reported by Punjab National Bank (Rs 13,417 crore), State Bank of India (Rs 7,718 crore) and IDBI Bank (Rs 5,663 crore). Four public sector banks, including Bank of India, are yet to report quarterly numbers.
Bad loans continued to rise with additions coming from sectors like power, where banks have delayed recognition of stress. For the 32 lenders that have reported earnings, gross non performing assets stood at Rs 8.77 lakh crore at the end of the March quarter.

Public Sector Banks Lose More Than Rs 50,000 Crore In Q4 government had announced a recap package of Rs 2.11 lakh crore. Of this, about Rs 90,000 crore was infused in FY18 and the remaining is due to be allocated this year.

Today under PM Modi's leadership one by one our banks are in losses and forced for merger. Is our own Vijaya Bank is the latest victim of NPA and fraud?

sri_elder, Karkala says that the Central government gives more capital to banks before merging... so banks to become stronger... then he thinks excessive collection of duties on petrol goes for bank recapitalization... and hallucinates that rupee would have been much stronger...1$=25/- rupees.
I honestly wonder, Karkala of which State he belongs to.

Employees of Vijaya Bank have worked hard to bring it into the present shape. Now the Bank is doing well and naturally other banks which are in red would like a merger with Vijaya Bank.

As an individual I would strongly feel that if a meger is looked for let it be with PROFIT MAKING Banks.

Vijaya Bank is a house hold name in the undivided Dakshina Kannada district and merging this great bank with a under loss bank is not at all acceptable to the people of this district. Merging will definitely change the present scenario as people may be hesitant to do business with the bank. Let us all request central government please do not come up with one more policy which is responsible for the collapse of Indian economy.

All the south Indian bank well managed from well educated people.
By considering merge option good one but propsal should be made with profitable bank.
To cover the mess up from north Indian looted bank not feasible to merge with good vijaya bank.
Merge option good under one tree different bank and we'll monitoring will be there from different control.
Similarly international company will not hire all the people from one country.preference will be given to different nation so all the internal loopholes will come out .and we'll strategy plans will be adopted to sort out the issues .
