Mangaluru, Nov 19: Mandd Sobhann’s Nach Sobhann programme launched its new "Baila-Hop" dance training programme in Mangaluru on Tuesday, combining traditional Konkani "Baila" with western "Hip-Hop" dance styles.
The event took place at Kalangann, where renowned dancer and choreographer, Pramod Alva, inaugurated the programme by unveiling anklets from beneath a bed of flowers, marking the symbolic start of the training.
In his speech, Alva reflected on his own journey with Mandd Sobhann, saying, “My dance career began with Mandd Sobhann’s Nach Sobhann. I spent eight years learning and performing "Baila" here. While many institutions offer western dance training, mastering folk forms like "Baila" requires joining an institution like Mandd Sobhann, which offers structured and disciplined training.” He wished the students success as they began their own dance journeys.
Mandd Sobhann Gurkar Eric Ozario also spoke at the event, commending the new initiative. “Programmes like Sumell and Kalakul have already brought vibrancy to the community, and now with "Baila-Hop", Nach Sobhann has been revitalised. It’s important to put in maximum effort and learn with discipline. After completing this training, I encourage you to continue your dance journey and excel in the field,” said Ozario.
Nach Sobhann leader Rahul Pinto gave a brief history of the programme’s evolution and highlighted the importance of the new training initiative. He outlined the 40-hour intensive course, which will teach both Konkani Baila and western Hip-Hop dance styles.
The "Baila-Hop" dance training programme will be conducted by esteemed instructors and will offer students the chance to perform in stage shows, music nights, album videos, and films, providing valuable exposure to the dance industry.
The event was attended by Mandd Sobhann president Louis Pinto and other prominent community leaders. The programme was compered by Delitia Pereira, who also expressed her gratitude to all those who attended.
