Bengaluru: HC dismisses PIL - imposes fine on litigant

Bengaluru, Aug 25: The state high court (HC) on Friday August 24 dismissed a public interest litigation filed by a person and imposed fine of Rs 5,000 on him.

The litigant had sought orders from the high court to undertake probe into the then union defence minister, chief minister of Maharashtra and the governor. He claimed that they were guilty of overlooking information provided by him by way of advance warning. This PIL was heard by a bench with chief justice, Dinesh Maheshwari and justice R Devadas.

The HC bench concluded that the petition lacks public interest, before dismissing it. It imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 for wasting the court's time. lt also directed the litigant to remit the fine amount to the chief minister's relief fund towards assisting the Kodagu flood affected people. It also got a bond executed by the concerned not to file petitions not backed by public interest.
