Mangaluru: St Aloysius Gonzaga inaugurates Science exhibition 'GON-SCI'

Mangaluru, Aug 3: 'GON-SCI' the maiden venture in Science exhibition was inaugurated on August 3.

Chief guest Dr Purushothama Chippar, an associate professor in the department of Mechanical Engineering at St Joseph Engineering college, here along with the rector Fr Dionysius Vaz SJ, manager Fr Melwin Mendonca SJ, Dr Fr Leo D’Souza and principal Grace Noronha were the dignitaries of the day.

Young budding scientists from class 6 to 10 actively involved themselves in preparing and displaying innovative models. The main objective was to bring out a common platform for students to give shape to their innovative ideas and learn from experiences. It also provided a medium for students to exhibit their creative ideas in exhibiting still and working models. Students experienced hands on learning in science. Students also displayed colourful and attractive rangoli of science related diagrams.



The inaugural programme was compered by Iden Jonathan Crasta of class 9 and Carol Michael Furtado of Class 8.

A prayerful environment was created with a blend of melodious voices and instruments by the school choir. Rebecca Faustina Mishra of class 10 welcomed the gathering. The chief guest Dr Purushothama Chippar along with other dignitaries spread light of knowledge by lighting a lamp.

A brief report was read by head girl, Delice Soraya Mendes of class 10 backed by a video presentation.

A brief introduction of the chief guest was given by the head boy Luke Samson Lobo of Class 10.

The chief guest addressed the gathering with a message that every person has a different aspect of looking at life which can bring out creative and innovative thinking in one’s life to meet challenges.

Rector Fr Dionysius Vaz SJ in his speech highlighted dcientific learning in young minds through abstract thinking by asking 'why' and 'why not' questions. He also stressed on developing a passion for science not only through theoretical knowledge but also with good communication skills.

Fr Melwin Mendonca spoke on identifying different learners namely, one who is well-versed in theory and the other who learns from environment through kinesthetic skills.

Dr Fr Leo D’Souza, a veteran Jesuit scientist encouraged the students by sharing the invention of low-cost test to detect lead-contaminated water by America’s top young scientist Geethanjali Rao.

The principal congratulated all the students and staff who were actively involved in making 'GON-SCI' a grand success.

As a token of love and appreciation, a lucky bamboo which creates safe and energised environment was presented to the dignitaries. Gratitude was expressed by Bhargav Gangadhar Kamath of class 7 for the efforts and contribution of every individual who was a part of 'GON-SCI'.

The convenors of this exhibition were Deepa Karkada, Shilpa Ballal and Beena Rosita Pais.

The programme concluded with the school anthem.
