Udupi: District observes World Population Day

Udupi, Jul 12: World Population Day – 2018 was jointly organised by district zilla panchayat, Dr G Shankar Women's First Grade College and Post-graduation Study Centre Ajjarkad, district Health and Family Welfare department, Lions Club, Udupi, and Karnataka State Government Employees’ Association, district branch at Lions Bhavan, Brahmagiri on Wednesday, July 11.

Addressing the gathering, Dinakar Babu, president zilla panchayat Udupi said, “There is need to make Udupi a drug addiction free district. But there are problems to eradicate it. Increasing population is one of them. Therefore, population must be controlled.”

A procession was taken out as part of creating awareness on increasing population, under the slogan of 'adopt family planning scheme for the betterment of tomorrow's life'.

Udupi municipality council president Meenakshi Madhava Bananje flagged off to procession.

Sheela K Shetty, vice-president of zilla panchayat, released the programme brochure. She said, “India is recognised at global level with regard to population. The role of government and Anganwadi Asha workers' effort is very important in controlling the population. We can solve problems of poverty, illiteracy and unemployment through population control.”

Subramanya Sherigar, district president of Karnataka State Government Employees’ Association said, “Earlier, population was not a serious problem because of high mortality rate. But now, the rate of population is increasing due to advanced medical facilities. Let people make use of family welfare measures to control population.”

Prizes were distributed to the winners of essay competition at the programme.

Students of Dr G Shankar Government Women's First Grade College performed a skit, which creates awareness among public on population.

Nalini Pradeep Rao, president, taluk panchayat Udupi, Manoj Prabhu, president, Udupi District Lions Club, Ram Rao, district officer of the Family Welfare department, Asha activists and members of the Lions Club were present on the occasion.

DHO and programme co-ordinator Rohini welcomed the gathering and delivered the keynote address. Prakash Kramadari, national service planning officer rendered the vote of thanks.

Vijaya Bai, district health education officer, compered the programme.
