Mangaluru: Govt holiday on Sep 8 soon to be reality: Catholic Sabha

Mangaluru, Jul 10: Government holiday for nativity feast on September 8, a long pending demand of Catholics in the coast is all set to become a reality.

At a press meet held here on July 10, Rolfy D Costa, president of Catholic Sabha, said, "For the last many years the Christian community of Dakshina Kannada has been demanding a government holiday on September 8, feast of nativity. It is a very important festival for Christians who live in the Konkan belt. As per tradition, family members get together to celebrate the feast. People residing in the Gulf and other parts of the world, choose this day to visit their native place, but our children, teachers and those working in government offices are unable to celebrate the feast which is religiously and traditionally important.”

“For several years we requested the government to grant a holiday on this day. Continuing our mission this year, we met minister U T Khader and submitted the memorandum. Without any delay he has considered our demand and spoken to the deputy commissioner. We later met the DC and he approved the demand. He has sent it to the government for its consent. So now, we need only a notification from the government and are waiting for it,” he added.

He further said, "We also met the chief minister in this regard. We have also demanded a separate board for Christians. CM has responded positively and we hope that our demands will be fulfilled soon.”

Fr Mathew Vas, spiritual director, Catholic Sabha, Anil Lobo, former president, Alwyn Quadres, Stany Lobo, Celestine were present.

Our forefathers started the celebration as a thanksgiving day to Mother Mary, for their liberation from the tyranny of Tippu Sultan . They combined it with their harvest festival. It is a day of family reunion. Only vegetarian meals are served on that day with odd numbers of vegetable curries, either 7,9 or 11. Fresh paddy grains blessed during the day's Holy Mass are crushed, mixed with ' Payasam ' and consumed by the family members together. The feast signifies a strong family bond. India is our Motherland which respects all religions. It is very fitting that the day is declared a state Holiday.

I understand the demand for a holiday on 8 September. For Konkan Catholics it is not just a religious feast but also a cultural one. It is the celebration of "first fruits" of the harvest. That is why paddy sheaves are blessed and distributed. The meal on that day is special and enjoyed by the family in gratitude for the blessings received from the land (Mother Earth). For other Catholics it is just the feast of the "Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary" and does not warrant a holiday. For Konkan Catholics it is much more than Mary's nativity. It is "Thanksgiving" as well.

Christians in India only had Christmas and Good Friday as government holidays. The BJP government has belittled the feast of Christmas by marking it as "good governance day" and making it a working day. This is very unfortunate! Consistently the BJP government has been vilifying the Christian community and its many works.

I am glad that the secular government in Karnataka Government is giving this request a consideration. I hope others in the Konkan Coast will also join in the celebrations and share in the blessings of Mother Earth.

How could a government cave in to such a demand when even catholic countries do not have a holiday for the Nativity feast. Catholics are given a fixed number of holidays in Canada, such as Christmas and Good Friday - and no more - India would be catering to minorities (even majority Hindus) if it recognizes only exceptional feast days (such as Holi, Deepavali, Ganesh Chaturti, Ramadan Id-ul-Fitr, etc,); all the rest should enjoy a fixed number of holidays, such as the Independence and Republic Days and Gandhi Jayanti. Anything more than that will reduce working days to a minimum. Those who wish to take holidays on other days important to them should be allowed to take them out of their annual holiday entitlements.

    Elsie, Kinnigoly/Canada:
Churches in Canada celebrate Nativity, but it is not a public holiday. It is not even a day of obligation. I know that because I have been a Catholic all my life and still am (I am not in the least anti-catholic as you allege without knowing who I am; perhaps my name has misled you!). And I have been in Canada for over half a century and have been a government lawyer for half that period. Perhaps before you were born!. And I came as a legal immigrant chosen by the Canadian High Commission in London for my English qualifications in 1964 - not an undocumented person who stayed on.
Thanksgiving is a universal holiday; it comes on different dates; if it comes on a wee-end, the following day is a holiday, as you must know.
So, when you criticize, do not assume too much.

Nativity of Mary is something sacred and held dearly to the hearts by Roman Catholics in Coastal India. When you can have public holiday for regionally celebrated festivals like Makar Sankranthi or sometimes for Nag Panchmi, I think the Monti Fest should be celebrated by one and all. I am very much in support of that. An extra holiday does not hurt :)

In a year we got 365 days and 52 weeks. India got major religions like Hindu, Muslim, Christian,Sikh, buddhist, jains, and other religion. In year 52 weeks means there are holidays 52 to 104 in year and each religion festivals. So India business will be closed for more than 6 months in year.
Instead of giving holidays on festivals why can't government declare 10 festival holidays only and this 10 days can be used by each religions. What Hindus will do on Eid and Christmas and what Muslim and Christians will do on diwali or any birth dates of our freedom fighters????
My birthday means I have apply for one day holiday and enjoy with my family and why people want holiday on my birthday?????
these Holidays are only to stay at home on tax payers money?????

man, you stay in Dubai. you dont pay taxes(as far as i hear). I am in UK, 40% tax . onchoor enkulnala alochane malple:(

On a serious note, holidays are not given to waste taxpayers money. You can always choose not to take the day off, but it's much much better to celebrate the holidays with people of other faith.

Who told you that non residents are not paying any taxes????? On our NRO account Banks charge us 33 percent taxes, I pay taxes on the purchase of my flat, grocery, and I pay taxes to government on my travelling on Bus, train, or by air. All Airport taxes collected from Non residents. If I buy any items in India they will not consider that we are non resident Indian and no taxes for them. If we take admission for our children all the colleges admit our children to the colleges in India on non resident quota and Non resident fee is charged. So we pay more tax than Indian even though we earn money from foreign countries.

Mario, Lalbagh: Good point, Then, Catholics should enjoy it, don't ask the other 97.2$ Indians to do the same. And they get plenty of annual holidays, leave with pay etc. from their employers - why not use some of that. Government should encourage employers and ask them to be generous in sanctioning leave.
