Mangaluru: ICYM Bejai unit celebrates Environment Day in unique way

Media Release

Mangaluru, Jul 9: ‘Just say no to plastic bags’. This was the motto as ICYM unit of St Francis Xavier Church, Bejai organised ‘Parisar Divas’ on the occasion of Environment Day on Sunday, July 8, in order to create awareness about the use of plastic which pollutes the environment.

After each mass on Saturday and Sunday, nearly 2,500 cloth bags were bought and distributed to the faithful of Bejai parish free of cost. People were also happy to receive these bags which can be used and reused. This unique idea of distributing cloth bags came up as previously ICYM association used to distribute saplings which was not practical since people live in flats they do not have land to plant these saplings. But if people use cloth bags instead of plastic bags, it would help save the environment in another way.

‘Parisar Divas’ was inaugurated after the Eucharistic celebration by parish priest Fr Wilson Vitus D’Souza, along with assistant parish priest Fr Rohan Lobo, principal of Lourdes Central School Fr Robert D’Souza, Fr Norbert Lobo, vice-president of parish pastoral parishad Stany Vas, president of ICYM Lionel Pinto and secretary Jisel D’Cunha.

The parish priest called upon the parishioners to avoid the use of plastic bags in order to save Mother Nature and start using eco- friendly bags. These bags were also distributed to nearby schools and shops.

The bags were sponsored by NorthernSky Properties.
