Panaji, Sep 17: South Goa's coastal village of Benaulim is reeling under tension from Tuesday September 16 night after a mob opposing mega housing project in the village attacked houses of local sarpanch and panch members after holding a massive rally at the police station.
The trouble began on Tuesday evening when Colva police, which covers Benaulim village, intercepted a bus to arrest alleged accused involved in attacking the local panchayat.
The village, a famous tourist destination with a pristine beach to reckon with, is opposing a mega housing project and had violent gram sabha meetings targeting local panchayat members.
The villagers marched to the police station last evening when two of their leaders were arrested for vandalizing the panchayat office earlier last week. The situation turned tensed forcing the police to requisition additional platoon of India Reserve Battalion (IRB).
Sensing bigger trouble, the police released both the leaders even as village continued reeling under the tension.
In the violent incident that was reported during wee hours, the mob attacked houses of local lady sarpanch Carmelina Fernandes and another panch damaging the property and vehicles around.
Police officials confirming the incident stated that they are yet to receive formal complaint in this matter.
"Sarpanch is reluctant to lodge a complaint as the mob may turn more violent," a police official added.
Benaulim village which remained abuzz with the tourist activities despite the off-season, remained tensed. Police have increased their presence in the village while local market is partially opened.
"The situation is much under control," police inspector Edwin Colaco stated.
