Mangalore, Sep 6: The valedictory of the centenary celebrations of St Sebastian School of Bendoor was held at St Sebastian Hall on Saturday September 6. N Vinay Hegde, chairman of Nitte Education Trust, was the chief guest who inaugurated the centenary fund during the function.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Shantaram Shetty, honourary president of the centenary celebration committee, said that despite six decades of independence, there is still illiteracy in the country. At least 25 percent of the population is below the poverty line and 30 percent is homeless. Only education can solve these problems, he opined.

Corporator Gretta Rebello, city block education officer Kodandaram, Bendoor parish priest Fr Peter Noronha, and Bethany congregation south India head Sr Lillis, were present on the dais. Sr Jyothi, head of Bethany congregation, presided over the function.

Sr Juliana Monis, correspondent of the school, welcomed the gathering. Sr Pavana, headmistress of the school, presented the annual report. Sr Marilita officiated the felicitation ceremony. Veronica Goveas proposed the vote of thanks and Leslie Rego compered the programme.

It is Father Noronha again who is spells success wherever he goes. I have known him for the past several decades. I have worked with him as a Governing Board Member when he was the Director of Father Muller's Hospital. After his stint at studies in U.S.A. and Canada he made a name for himself in Katipalla where he organized a people's forum for self employment.

He was a builder by nature and was responsible for a number of buildings that came up at F.M.C.I. during his tenure over there which are put to good use now. I see him with prominent (not just prominent but good people) like Dr. Shantaram Shetty and Mr. Vinay Hegde together with Sr. Julian Mary - the correspondent of The School. Kudos to you Father Peter on the celebration of The Centenary of The School. May it continue to grow and my good wishes are with you. Joe Gonsalves

Shri N. Subba Rao, an old student of this school, at his age of 93 years, attended this Centenary function. An old student of 93 years, attending the centenary celebration of his school is a great event and nothing was reported about this great event and no photo was taken. Your reporter has missed a great moment.

Congrats and all the best St.sebastian school. I was a old student of this school. The school building was next to St.sebastian church (presently the parish hall). I enjoyed going to this school till my 7th. We had great teachers in that school. All the best.

Congratulations. It is so wonderful to note that the school has completed a hundred years! I would particularly like to point out that it also marks over 70 years since I started my first class in the parish school, way back in 1936! I quit in 1939 to join St. Aloysius lower school. Mohan
