Udupi: TV reporter held for assault of officer in drunken state

Udupi, Apr 23: Reporter of a television channel, identified as Shijith (34), was arrested on the night of Saturday April 21 by police personnel of Malpe station here. The reporter, who is said to be working for 'Focus TV', has been accused of obstructing excise inspector, Chandramohan, from discharging duties and assaulting him.

The accused was remanded to judicial custody by the judge of the court till April 30 after he was produced in court.

Chandramohan happens to be a member of the team entrusted with the task of enforcing election mode of conduct. It is said that a team of officials visited Shetty Lunch Home at night and conducted verification. While driving away after buying Ghee Roast from there, the accused along with his friend reportedly followed the vehicle of the team of officials. They intercepted the vehicle of officials near Malpe road bend. It is said that the duo chided the officials for being corrupt and used filthy words against them, at the same time recording their movements through video camera.

The police said that on this occasion, the two sides exchanged some heated words. It is said that the accused, instead of relenting, followed the vehicle of officials, and again blocked their vehicle, abused the officials in the singular, duly recording the same on video. The accused reportedly also held the collar of Chandramohan and attacked him.

The staff immediately arrested Shijith. The person accompanying Shijith fled from the spot. The arrested person was subjected to medical examination, where it was confirmed that he had consumed liquor, it is gathered.
