Udupi, Mar 16: The general body meeting of Kannada Sahitya Parishat (KSP) was held at at Hotel Kediyoor, Mahajan hall, on March 15. The meeting which was organised for making amendment in the bylaw of the Parishat was organized after 20 years.

KSP has approved the amendment in the bylaw regarding reservation and extension of the term of KSP president and office bearers, informed Dr Manu Balegar.

Addressing media persons, while briefing the general body meeting, Dr Manu said, “About 99.12% of the members voted for the amendment. As many as 795 members have endorsed the amendment of president and remaining seven members have opposed the proposals.

“Opportunity for SC community for the representing KSP has been increased to two, one seat for Scheduled Tribe community and two seats for women representation are the major amendments,” he said.

He also proposed the idea of amendment in the KSP bylaw to extend the term of the KSP president and members of executive committee to 5 years from the present term of three years. This proposal was criticized by few members of KSP.

A group of committee members went to the high court for the writ petition 11455/2018 against making amendment, but the HC dismissed the petition on March 15.

Manu Balegar justified his stand claiming that the extension of term will save money. “Last year they spent Rs 42 lac for elections, but now it may require Rs 65 to Rs 75 lac to conduct elections,” he said. In spite of wasting public money, KSP proposed to extend the term.

“Earlier, there was only one polling booth in Bengaluru, now it will be set up at 28 places. During election, the total percentage of voting is 57-58% in the state, but in Bengaluru alone, it is 30-35%. Now there are 3,02,500 members in KSP. We are going as per the representation Act and rules of KSP. It needs 100 members in quorum,” said Balegar.

Over 802 members appeared in the meeting including presidents of all districts.

This is the 13th amendment and it will be approved by the registration department after verifying its authentication.

The KSP working committee endorsed Baligar's proposal.

Surendra Adiga, district president of KSP said that 11.5 cent of land is marked for the construction of Kannada Bhavan near Brahmagiri, IMA Bhavan.

The Kergalu village of Kundapura taluk has decided to commemorate revolutionary poet Dr Gopalkrishna Adiga Kalagrama. This resolution taken in last year’s annual KSP convention.

Dr Manu said, “If land is donated to KSP, Rs 10 lac will be sanctioned for the building.
