Mangaluru, Feb 16: Lions Club International President Dr Naresh Aggarwal who was on a Mangaluru visit, attended programmes organised under the aegis of various Lion Clubs in the city on
Thursday.
Dr Aggarwal inaugurated the Lions Seva Mandir at Vamanjoor and later visited the Lions Limb Centre and Lions Burns Centre at District Wenlock Hospital.
Before attending the banquet honor at Fr Muller Conventional hall, he addressed media and explained the services rendered by the organisatiom.
“Lions Club International is a NGO of volunteers conducting humanitarian services around the globe. In its hundred years history, it has served millions. The action which is taken by Lions volunteers at the time of various natural calamities, refugee issues, and helping people living in extreme poverty is highly appreciated worldwide," he said.
The Lions volunteers are spread worldwide. The current membership of the organisation is 14.5 lacs in 47,000 clubs across 210 countries. Now the club is celebrating its 101st year of its existence. Lions are also active in the fields of health, education, civil needs, rural development and self employment. Giving sight to the blind is our top priority and millions have so far benefitted from our "Sight first" programmes, he informed.
Under the centennial service challenge programmes, special emphasis is being given to vision care, environment, relieve hunger programmes, youth empowerment, diabetic awareness and pediatric cancer awareness programmes, he added.
"In the start of centennial year we set a target to collect USD 200 million for service programmes. We already achieved this goal and created history before concluding the celebration year. We are 400 Lions hospitals around the globe and are serving the poor. We are also running schools with a motto to provide quality education for poor children,” he said.
