Bengaluru, Jan 31: Police personnel of Sadashivanagara station in the city have arrested four persons relating to attempting to fleece students of M R Ramaiah Medical College here, duly accusing them of holding stock of ganja with them.
The arrested accused are Babu, driver of the bullet proof vehicle of the VIP department of state intelligence department, S Poova (42) from Gautampura, Gopinath (25), a resident of Deenabandhu Nagar, and Selvam (45) from Laxmipura. An auto rickshaw was seized from their possession.
The head constable of intelligence department, Babu, had raided the rented room in which Amit, a student of M S Ramaiah Medical College, stayed with his friends in Lottegollahalli, Kodigehalli in the city at 10 pm on January 20. They reportedly collected 200 grams ganja found inside the room, took into custody Nausheen, a ganja supplier, and threatened them. Babu then is said to have threatened the students that unless they paid three lac rupees, case would be registered against them and they will be sent behind the bars. The students, who turned fearful, finally agreed to pay Rs 50,000. They also are said to have paid an advance of Rs 1 5,000, duly promising to pay the balance amount by borrowing from friends staying at Malleshwaram.
The gang then took the students to near the shrine dedicated to Lord Ayyappa at Sadashivanagar in an auto rickshaw they had brought, and made the students to call their friends to the spot. They then made Amit and other students to get seated inside the auto rickshaw before beating them up. The students shouted for help. Police personnel on patrol duty, Ashwath Reddy and Krishnappa, who heard their cries went to help and found the culprits and their victims inside the auto rickshaw.
The police stated that intelligence department staff are not empowered to conduct raids. They pointed out that in addition to conducting unauthorized raid, the staff had attacked the students and ganja traffickers and placed demand for money. On the basis of these charges, the arrested persons were sent to prison. Nausheedn and his accomplices who face the charge of trading in ganja, stand arrested, they explained.
