Udupi, Jan 26: Udupi district administration on Friday January 26 celebrated the 69th Republic Day at open theatre ground, Beedinagudde here.
District in-charge minister Pramod Madhwaraj hoisted the national flag and received the guard of honour from the district armed police, scouts and guides, NCC cadets, home guards and other teams.
In his address, Madhwaraj noted that Republic Day happens to be a day on which Indians reinforce their patriotism and salute their constitution with pride and respect.
He said that the government has created new Kaup, Brahmavar, Byndoor and Hebri taluks in tune with the popular demand and in the interests of the development of the district. He also said that the government had earmarked Rs 34.08 crore for the maintenance of rural roads during the year 2017-18 and that till now 236 works amounting to Rs 15 crore have been completed. He also spelt out the goal of making the district garbage-free by October 2 this year through Swachha Udupi Mission, by converting waste into resources through scientific methods.
The minister inspected guard of honour extended to him on the occasion.
Pramod spoke about impressive performances under various schemes aimed at providing houses for the poor people like Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, Basava Vasati scheme, Dr B R Ambedkar housing scheme, Devaraj Aras housing scheme and Ashraya scheme.
In the agricultural sector, he gave information about micro irrigation units provided through subsidy scheme and thrust on farm mechanization because of acute shortage of agricultural labour.
Pramod stated that PWD department had developed 465.2 km long district main road at a cost of Rs 212.44 crore and 11 bridges were built by spending Rs 31.68 crore. He said that six new Karnataka Public Schools will be set up in the district under which each school gets ten lac rupees as grant from the government. Steps are being taken to set up Indira Canteens in Udupi, Manipal, Karkala and Kundapur shortly, he confirmed.
Madhwaraj thanked the people, legislators, officials and others for extending support in doing excellent work in the district and asked parents and teachers to provide noble and able guidance to their children towards becoming excellent future citizens of India.
A beautiful march-past was performed led by Udupi reserved armed police. Students from different schools performed colourful dances on patriotic songs on the occasion.
On the occasion of Republic Day, district level 'Sarvothama Seva Prashasti' were conferred as per the order of the state government on Antony Maria Immanuel M, joint director of agriculture Udupi, Dr Nagabhushan Udupa H, taluk health officer, Kundapur, S Harikrishna Shivathaya, assistant director, Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Scheme Udupi taluk panchayat, Veena Vivekanand, assistant child development scheme officer Udupi, Sudhakar Shetty, revenue inspector, Udupi revenue division and H Devaraj Pana, forest guard, Ambalpady patrol Udupi range.
Talking laptops were distributed to visually challenged students and sports kits to different organisations.
Priyanka Mary Francis, deputy commissioner, Anuradh G, ADC, Laxman Nimbargi, district superintendent of police, Meenakshi Madhav Bannanje, president, CMC, Narasimha Murthy, president of urban development authority and others were present.
