Mangaluru, Jan 23: It is learnt that some undertrials lodged in the district prison here inflicted physical and mental torture on another person lodged in the same prison and succeeded in extorting Rs 15 lac from his parents.
The person who had to cough up Rs 15 lac in this way happens to be Sirin Madhusudan. It is said that eight prisoners including Tilak, Mithun, Shivu, Nikhil, Raju and Charan were involved in this crime.
Sirin Madhusudan, who was the manager of Kulai branch of Indian Overseas Bank here, is in judicial custody relating to illegal diversion of Rs 55 crore belonging to Karnataka Rural Infrastructure Development Ltd (KRIDL). It is said that Tilak belonging to Kodikere gang and some others were lodged in the same cell in which Madhusudan has been accommodated.
They demanded money from Madhusudan but he refused. Reportedly they attacked him physically and continued to physically assault him, demanding share in the money Sirin had presumably siphoned off from the account of KRIDL. Through frequent ragging, they forced Sirin to call his parents from inside the prison by using a mobile phone, asking them to bring money. The parents, under threat, succumbed under pressure and remitted Rs 15 lac in three installments, it is learnt.
Parents of Sirin Madhusudan have filed a complaint in Barke police station in connection with this extortion.
