Udupi: Renovation of district jail - Prisoners shifted to Karwar for three months

Udupi, Jan 20: Prisoners from the district prison in Hiriadka were shifted to Karwar district jail on Saturday, January 20 due to the renovation work of the building wall.

All 91 prisoners including 15 staff were shifted to Karwar.

Speaking to daijiworld, jailer Iranna Ranganpur said, "The renovation work has already begun. The prisoners were shifted with police protection. They will be brought back to Udupi district jail after three months when the renovation work gets completed."

The district jail located in Anjaru in Hiriadka was built in 2009. A part of barrel and the kitchen wall developed cracks and as a result collapsed last year. Hence, the renovation of wall, construction of underground drainage system and painting of the building was taken up at a cost of Rs 60 lac.
