Bengaluru, Jan 18: Karnataka chief minister, Siddaramaiah, instructed the police to identify the religious fundamentalists involved with inciting communal passions in the society, and if necessary, book them under Goonda Act and extern them. He said that suo moto cases should be registered against people spreading hatred through social media.
Addressing a press conference after taking part in the annual police meet held at the police headquarters here on Wednesday January 17, Siddaramaiah analyzed that communal clashes will continue to happen as long as religious bigots exist. He felt that taking precautionary measures is the only way to stop communal clashes from happening.

Noting that of late, fundamentalists are more active in social websites and that they have been disturbing peace in the society by publishing provocative statements and posts, he said he has asked the police to act against the culprits strictly and extern them. "No people other than religious bigots and communally charged persons attack the police. I have told the police at act tough against such crimes," he added.
Intelligence failure
Siddaramaiah expressed his dissatisfaction at the failure of intelligence department to foresee unsavoury incidents happening in Dakshina Kannada district. He felt that if there was advance inkling about the murders of Deepak Rao and Basheer, legal action could have been taken to prevent such incidents from happening. He blamed the intelligence department for its failure to stop these incidents and said that the department has been asked to actively function in sensitive areas.
The state government has decided to conduct separate appointment process for intelligence department in view of complaints about improper functioning of the intelligence department, and to give them special training, Siddaramaiah said. He also said that the police have been asked to specially target drug traffickers as drugs have direct impact on the future of students.
Noting that crime rate has marginally dropped by one percent in 2015-16 as compared to previous year as per the report of National Crime Records Bureau, the chief minister said that the officials have been directed to lay additional emphasis on safety of women and children.
