Mangaluru to Dubai : Drunken pilot of SpiceJet delays departure by five hours

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jan 18: A Turkish pilot who was to command the SpiceJet flight from here to Dubai was found to be heavily intoxicated. As a result, the flight with 180 passengers on board, which was to depart at midnight, was put off for about five hours. This incident is not only strange, but also reflects the callous attitude of the staff manning the aircraft, taking into account the fact that it could have jeopardized the lives of its passengers.

SpiceJet has been operating flights between the city and Dubai since about a year. The aircraft is leased from Corendon Airlines in Turkey through an agreement. All the people manning this aircraft are from Turkey. Sources said that the pilot, who was caught for consuming excessive quantities of liquor, has set up her residence in the city. Sources said that she will not be allowed to operate any flights till investigation is conducted into the incident and a final decision is taken.

The current incident follows several unwanted incidents that have happened in the international airport during the past some months. The flight took off with five hours delay after an alternative pilot was arranged.

The flight was to leave here at 12.40 am on Wednesday. As many as 180 passengers of the flight had completed check-in formalities and were awaiting the call to board the aircraft. Other staff including those in charge of the runway were waiting for the aircraft to get clearance and airborne.

As usual, the pilot was subjected to medical examination two hours before the passengers were to board the plane. The medical officers found that the pilot was intoxicated and had no control over herself. The airport staff immediately cancelled the departure timing of the flight and took steps to move against the drunk female pilot, who is 35-year-old. The passengers were officially informed that the departure was delayed on account of technical snag, and the flight finally left at 6 am with the help of substitute pilot.

But the staff at the airport got scent of the problem. The people at the airport were compelled to spend the night without sleep because of the goof-up of the pilot. If the medical officers had not detected that the pilot was drunk, the flight would have faced grave danger. The passengers, who were inconvenienced because of the pilot's carelessness, however heaved a sigh of relief after coming to know about the problem, and thanking God for saving their lives.

Alcohol and aviation do not mix, whether you are a passenger or a pilot, and indeed the effects of alcohol can be intensified at altitude.
The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) says: “The majority of adverse effects produced by alcohol relate to the brain, the eyes, and the inner ear — three crucial organs to a pilot.
“Brain effects include impaired reaction time, reasoning, judgment, and memory. Visual symptoms include eye muscle imbalance, which leads to double vision and difficulty focusing. Inner ear effects include dizziness, and decreased hearing perception.”
The FAA says: “Alcohol avoidance is as critical as developing a flight plan, a good pre-flight inspection, obeying air-traffic control procedures, and avoiding severe weather.” It notes that the effect of a hangover can continue for 48 to 72 hours following the last drink, degrading cognitive and psychomotor abilities.
Spicejet is one of the worst airline experience in my entire life of air travel. The abusive staff in Dubai who manhandles passenger is continued to work with his promotion even after writing thrice to Ajay Singh co-founder and present owner of Indian low cost airline SpiceJet.
This shameless low cost budget airlines is not only threat to the life of passenger bound to Mangalore which has already seen one of the aircrash in India's history.
When FAA cautions the effect of alcohol can remain for 48 to 72 hours, this pilot is allowed fly in less than 5 hours is shocking and complete violation of the regulations.
The slogan for Spicejet says, ''FLYING FOR EVERYONE''. Now they should amend it ''FLYING FOR EVERYONE on your own risk''. Just another disaster in making.
Don't be surprised if next time if Spicejet lands in 'Malpe beach' instead of Mangalore International Airport.

We should appreciate that until today we never found a driver of any Indian train drunk and driving a train. Really Indian Railways is great.

Wikipedia says 99.8% of Population of Turkey were MUSLIMs.... They might have read Quran very well than the Pandits living in India.

Is drinking till neck that too by a women of Islamic Turkey .... Strange.... This may not embarrass the Pandits of India as they belong to a special Peace Loving Community which may not be there in Turkey.

We are proud of our Peace Loving Community of India that won't DRINK..... but.....

Robin.. What do you want to prove with your dirty comments on religion.. All the religion are peaceful and teaches good things, If one woman drinks alcohol then why why entire community is blamed. Whichever communitity she belongs to it was her fault, .. In India Every minute one rape is reported so do we blame to all the indians.. grow up man ..

Oh.... Now my comments became cheap.... How other comments became costly ?

When you say that BOOK should be kept above all books in the shelf, When you endorse a human beings body should be covered by black, when drinking is prohibited in the so called religion and more than that for every topic FEKU FEKU comments came ... Then it is not cheaper right ?

I found it is strange especially by a women from a country with such a religious aspects to do a dangerous piloting with overdose of Alcohol.

Tell me frankly how my comments are cheaper ? If she was allowed to do her work in such an inebriated state and any danger happened then my comments will not become cheaper instead the bodies recovered after the tragedy may be cheaper.

@Robin Byndoor,of course your comment is out of place.where is it written that lady Pilot was a muslim?and when she is why should it we bother about it.?It matters only about her job and the reason.Everyone should mind their own business and not anything else.when you had any problems regarding this flight, complain directly to the duty officer, but not comment in media.

    @RITA, Germany,

    Ma'am,

I have heard that "A Mangalore Catholic Community engaged in a bash (Birth Day or else_) have been arrested in Saudi." I have heard that other religion ladies also should wear burkha when they step at saudi. As Turkey is also 98% muslim populated my assumption that they have strong influence of their rules on their citizen. So this Pilot is one among. In that perspective my assumptions are out of place ?

I believe that religion is good for their people and it teaches well how to live among the mass. many people voiced their concern here and all of them not complained to duty officer.

    Kudos to the medical officer.

My wife was one of the passengers, and she had reported to Airport at 8pm. Correct Information was not passed on till last moment. She had connecting flight from Dubai, which she missed. In what way Spice Jet will compensate it

Plus there is no press release about this Issues / countermeasure from Spice Jet. Are they waiting for things to happen

Appreciate the medical staff for saving lives of many.

"The medical officers found that the pilot was intoxicated and she had no control over herself."
The above statement clearly says the lady was fully drunk... and still she has come on duty to fly the aircraft.
Isnt this evidence enough for attempt to mass murder?
They should be jailed for this grave offence so that no pilot repeats this.
As I am writing this am remembering all the drivers of public transport ...wonder who checks them...mainly during night journey

Probably these pilots think it is driving a car or a bus. Both are equally bad.
Drinking should be prohibited for pilots on duty and strictly implemented.

We need to thank God that the pilot was caught and saved several lives of passengers.

    SpiceJet leased aircraft from Turkey...
And all the crew from there....
She is from Turkey, a woman, a pilot & is excessively drunk....
Why are budget airline pilots getting drunk.....
Do they have too much stress, lack of sleep & less family time, too many long & odd work hours.....
Will it help to have Indian crew so that they can visit their family often.....
With all these things can we at least plan for an alternate airport with a longer runway close by....
Thinking that table top airports & budget airlines do not fit well together....
