Bengaluru: Uber driver attacks passenger for insisting on seat belt

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Nov 17: A CEO of an advertising agency took to twitter to express his anguish, after he was assaulted by a mob of cab drivers outside Kempegowda International Airport on Monday night.

Dave Banerjee, CEO of Fisheye Creative Solutions and co-founder of a yoga-wear brand had flown to Bengaluru from Mumbai and hailed an Uber cab with his colleagues to reach home. When he noticed that the seatbelt buckle of the car’s backseat was not accessible, he asked the Uber driver to stop. However, the driver did not comply.

After repeatedly telling the driver, Dave warned the driver in a stern voice. At that time the driver stopped the car. Dave and his colleagues exited the car and booked another cab. By then, the driver had managed to gather a mob of drivers who started checking different cabs and when they spotted the one with Dave, they dragged out his colleagues and assaulted Dave in the car.

What further annoyed Dave was Uber’s insensitive attitude. When Dave pressed the SOS button within the Ube’s app, the company’s call centre agent instructed him to call the local police as they could not help.

He alleged that Uber’s mails seemed unapologetic. All they did was say sorry for the inconvenience. “You can’t beat people up and then say ‘sorry for the inconvenience’,” he retorts in anger.

After the issue went viral on Twitter, an Uber spokesperson said in a statement: “What’s been described has no place on our app. Safety of our riders is a priority for us at Uber. We have barred the driver-partner’s access to the Uber app. We will support the law enforcement authorities in their investigation and proceedings in any way possible.”

It is not known whether Dave has complained to police or not.

People come from far and wide to to settle in Bengaluru and behave rudely with local drivers, as if they have purchased Bengaluru.

passenger claims that he was beaten up 20 cab drivers...if a person is beaten up by 20 can drivers, he would be seriously injured....aggrieved passenger is highly educated but did not go to hospital nor filed police complaint...his tweet does not sound true....

Even we had come across a very serious issue regarding a journey in Bangalore. The driver was fully drunk and out of his senses at the start of the journey itself. And because of his negligence and not reaching on time we had missed our enroute journey to Mangalore. Immediately we had mailed a complaint on the uber app and to our surprise uber only replied " sorry for the inconvenience, we cannot help you on this" A very negligent attitude by Uber Company. Feel sorry for the above person.

It is an unfortunate episode. A passenger whether in a taxi or a private car is obliged to wear seat belts. It is an offence not to wear seat belts in India. However a driver of a taxi has no right to assault a passenger.. All that he can say is to leave the taxi.

Here is a case of a taxi driver taking law into his own hands. Hope the Police will make proper investigations and ensure that the guilty person is booked.

Uber should do random checks on the vehicle safety including brakes and cleanliness. This a small expense for the large befits they get by way of more customers.

UBER has goonda drivers only due to the company that is trying to beat other competitors like Ola etc....
They attached Vehicles without checking the background of the drivers.
It's always better to use OLA which is a Indian Company & such incidents are less with this Operator.
