Study at MIO proves that honey reduces radiation mucositis (ulcers) during cancer treatment and improves body weight: Dr Suresh Rao

Mangaluru, Oct 25: Radiation is an important treatment modality for the control and cure of cancer. However in some patients radiation can cause ulcers in the mouth. In most people the ulcers are mild, but in some they can be very severe. This invariably leads to severe pain and causes reduction in food intake.

Research at MIO by Dr Suresh Rao has now shown that applying honey prevents and reduces the radiation-induced ulcers by almost 60%. Honey was considered to be a possible anti ulcer agent because of its wound healing, antimicrobial, analgesic (reducing pain) and anti-inflammatory effects. Also, honey being a dietary agent had good acceptance from the patients.

The patients who used honey during treatment had less weight loss and recovered faster. Dr Rao said that this is extremely useful as patients with head and neck cancer usually experience weight loss which affects their general health, working proficiency and quality of life. This significant study with honey is now an important aspect in patient care for the scientific fraternity.
