Bahraini Woman Wins Battle to become a Man

MANAMA, Jun 19: A Bahraini woman won her three-year legal battle to become a man yesterday. Zainab Abdulhafed Rabie became the second Bahraini woman to successfully undergo sex change surgery and be recognised as male by the courts.

It was a life-changing moment for the 34-year-old, whose life has been plagued with problems ever since he embarked on his gender reassignment surgery.

"I'm so happy and relieved that they (the court) ruled in my favour because this has been a long journey and it's finally over," he told the GDN after the High Civil Court issued its verdict yesterday.

However, he must wait another three months to legally change his name to Hussain since the courts are about to take a break for summer.

But he described that as simply a formality that must be completed at the Lower Civil Court.

"There's no point attempting that now because the court holidays are soon," he said.
