Udupi, Oct 23: “Only the groom can pay dowry in Islam. However increasing incidents of dowry these days are an anxious development,” said Udupi Khazi P A Ibrahim Bekal.
He was speaking in a three-day long mass wedding of poor girls held at Badar Jamia masjid premises here as a part of anniversary celebrations of Tipu Sultan welfare association on Saturday, October 21.
“The participation of young men is important in stopping dowry system. Every youngster should take a vow not to receive dowry to put an end to the practice. The cooperation of parents is necessary in this work,” he said and explained the history of Islam about dowry.
The wedding of Ansif-Nasima, residents of Kolpe Nelyadi and Hameed, Dendoorkatte resident and Zeenath, Malloor resident were performed by Udupi Khazi P M Ibrahim. The brides were presented five sovereign gold and clothes and the grooms were gifted with clothes on the occasion.
Belapu gram panchayat president Devi Prasad Shetty announced that the two couples who got married will be given sites at Belapu.
