Exempt handmade products from GST, urges CM's letter to Jaitley

Bengaluru, Oct 19 (PTI): Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday wrote to Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, urging him to exempt handmade products from the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime.

Siddaramaiah’s letter to Jaitley comes even as veteran theatreperson Prasanna’s hunger strike against taxation of handmade products entered its sixth day in Bengaluru.

“Handmade products of various kinds are produced by millions of artisans and poor rural households in India. Imposition of GST on such products has had an adverse effect on the livelihood of artisans,” Siddaramaiah wrote, calling it “a very critical issue that the GST Council should take note of and decide on a priority basis.” Agriculture Minister Krishna Byre Gowda is Karnataka’s representative in the federal GST Council.

“I have received a representation from a committee constituted by the Gram Seva Sangh and consisting of noted activists, including Ashis Nandy, Uzramma and Shyam Benegal, seeking exemption of various handmade products produced and marketed by producer cooperative societies and their federations from GST,” the chief minister wrote.

This representation requires serious and urgent consideration and a positive resolution, Siddaramaiah urged Jaitley in the letter.

“This would not only benefit a large segment of our rural population, but also give a boost to rural employment and sustainability,” he said.

The flat super high taxation through GST will be killing millions of small industries in India and pushing too many millions to the hunger march. Already, that is felt at the Dharavi slum in Mumbai, where 1 million people were merely surviving doing small scale business in leather-textiles and other business enterprises. This too high taxation through GST shows the the brain chemistry of the great RSS/BJP Economists of India.

If abrupt correction measures are not enacted through curtailing the high taxation, India will be faced with some severe unemployment crisis; adding to the already existing high unemployment rate.

People who know the meaning of Cottage Industries and its benefits to rural and less fortunate group will never impose any sort of tax. BJP was all elated to impose congress proposed preliminary level projects without realizing the ground reality. If it was successful BJP would have been in all out war with all opposition to take full credit. Now since it has back fired BJP wants to pass the buck to congress. What a childish behaviour. Signs that BJP has no idea about economy, governance, defence and most of all No Indegenious Self Planned Innovative and creative ideas. After all Rowdies think and do like rowdies.

32% of the leather sandals and 15% of other leather goods are made at the largest slum in India called Dharavi in Mumbai. Many dealers of leather business are closing due to the declined demand because the price of certain items went upward from Rs. 1300 to 2000, the GST miracle of acha din. Also the big shortage of cow leather to make soft leather goods. How the consumers can spend money like that? Thus the stores sales are plunging. Modi throug his big mouth promised acha din but doing everything to create hunger-misery and suicide.

Also exempt education fees and or exam certification fees from GST. For CCIE exam which cost $1600 one has to pay extra INR20000 as GST. This is absolutely absurd and torture from current Government.

Same ways it applies to all courses and all exams for that course 18% GST seperate. This is too much. This is demotivatimg poor and middle class from seeking education.
