Udupi, Oct 19: Fire was seen in a moving KSRTC Volvo bus moving from Bhatkal to Mangaluru on Thursday, October 19. The fire was extinguished with the help of onlookers and the danger was averted.

The bus had entered the Udupi city on its way from Bhatkal to Mangaluru. On the way between city and service bus stands, people on the road saw some fire and smoke in the back side of the bus where the engine is located. The driver was informed by the onlookers and he stopped the bus.

People brought water from nearby places and extinguished the fire.

There were 15 passengers in the bus.

The passengers were sent in a different bus. The affected bus was taken to KSRTC depot.

The reason for the fire is not known.

Volvo trains two drivers when they purchase one vehicle free of cost. This training duration is of one week and basic needs of safe driving, technical know how, maintenance procedures taught.
KSRTC Volvo drivers are better than any other private drivers. But maintenance part KSRTC management lagging behind.

While travelling from Udupi to BL by Airawat, I noticed a buzzer with hazard warning lights come up, and the driver was lucky to find some water at a nearby tap using his metal bucket and filled up the cooling system.
Still the buzzer/light didn't go off!!
No one knew exactly what was wrong with the bus.
All I can say KSRTC volvos are the worst in K'taka compared to maintenance and safety of privately owned Volvos.
They are also not kept clean most of the time.
Am sure their maintenance is also not done as per Volvo standards.
Drivers of KSRTC Volvos are totally ignorant about the correct driving and maintenance of the buses as well.
That is why you will find most of the buses bruised and battered into scrap like looks.

This was a miraculous escape for the all the people in the KSRTC Volvo bus. Good presence of mind of the onlookers who noticed the fire but also informed the driver who was unaware and timely extinguished it. Thank God for this.

Release the hand break. These Volvo high end buses should be driven systematically. All drivers should be properly trained not only driving but the system and safety.

Now whom to blame about this ..?

    PM/CM ?

This is irresponsible by KSRTC department and RTO, there is no procedure to inspect vehicle every year.

how many vehicles are running without insurance/pollution check/number plate etc - who going to inspect ! government should allow strict rules on this.

    failure government with uneducated people.

Mr. Shrikanth, I’m a frequent KSRTC User travelling from Bangalore to Udupi. And they are prompt in the maintainance of their Volvo buses. And they are Emission Checked too. And we must be proud to say that our State transport is a top state transport corporation in the country.

Dear Mr. Gracio, you may be right about the maintenance of the Volvo buses that run to Bangalore or for that matter even Mumbai/Chennai/Hyderabad. But, as it happens, I'm a frequent traveller on the Mangalore - Udupi route and most of us know that the Volvo buses used here are in terrible shape.
Twice an engine stalled (or overheated?), some windows are loose and not fixed to the frame properly and the most common one- missing headlights or tail/brake lights which all means that maintenance is not done by Volvo personell.

Dear NM, I partially agree with whatever you have said. But at some Instance, I feel that we being the public, misuse public transport to some extent(not all, but some). So instead of blaming the Government for their mistakes, isn’t it good, if we be responsible and do our duty promptly? I’m sure that even the government won’t fail to do theirs.

And even you make have seen the condition of NH-66 neat Padubidri. It’s pathetic. And Volvo busses having low base, would definitely be spoilt because of this reason.

Mr. NM, Mangalore: As far as maintennce of KSRTC buses concerned, they are well maintained. Even the well maintained aircrafts fail in the mid air inspite of maintenance. I have used KSRTC Volvo buses during day time travelling going to Bangalore and Mysore, never had problem. After all it is a mechanism whether the engine or AC unit of the bus. The road condition is also a contributing factor. Inspite of all the odds, still they reach in time. Let us thank God for the safety of the people who traveled in that bus. KSRTC buses are one of the best buses giving tough time for Private buses. Jai Hind.
