Bengaluru: Black Monday witnesses 14 deaths in Karnataka

Bengaluru, Oct 17: Monday October 16 is a date the people of the state want to forget as early as possible. A total of 14 people lost their lives in different tragedies which included rain, lightning, and LPG cylinder blast.

While seven lives were lost in a single incident in which a LPG cylinder blast caused the fragile building occupied by five families at Ejipura in the city to collapse, causing seven deaths and several injuries, seven more died due to rain-related tragedies. Three persons from a single family who were fast asleep died after the roof of their house at Gajendragadh in Gadag district came crashing down due to heavy rain.  Mehabubi Abdul Saab Muchchali (55), and her two grandchildren, Najneen (5) and Muskan (6) with whom she was sleeping, died in this incident. Dawal Saab, Hussain Basha and Murtaza, who were injured, were admitted into a hospital. The incident happened at around 5.30 am on Monday.

Three more perished after drowning in an agricultural pit in Basavakalyana, Bidar district. Keshav Baburao (40) and Satyavati (35), a farmer couple, and Laxmi Indrajit Wadekar, were walking by the fields, when they drowned in the pit after inadvertently stepping into it. It is said they did not  know about the existence of this pit there and the pit was not visible because of standing water.

One more, identified as Madayya (90) was washed away in the flood of Arkavathi river at Hulikere, Ramanagara on Monday morning, locals said. His body is not yet traced and fire brigade failed to find the body in spite of day-long efforts.
