Bengaluru: Kannada now compulsory in all schools in state

Bengaluru, Oct 16 (DHNS): Kannada will now be taught either as first language or second language between Class I and X in all schools across the state.

The government has issued an order in this regard, covering Kendriya Vidyalayas, CBSE and ICSE schools and schools following the state syllabus in English medium.

The order follows the Kannada Language Learning Act, 2015, the guidelines of which the government has finalised.

Kannada syllabus for Class I will be applicable to outside students seeking admission between Classes II and VIII.

In case of students seeking admission to class III and above, teachers should teach Kannada syllabus of Class I for one year.

In the subsequent year, those students will have to study the Kannada syllabus prescribed for their class along with their classmates.

Karnataka Secondary Education Board has been directed to frame syllabus for students from outside the state directly joining Classes IX and X.

The government has constituted competent authorities to take action against managements that fail to implement the government order.

They are also empowered to visit schools for inspection and initiate disciplinary action.

Circulars will be issued to all schools regarding the order.

Block Education Officers have been directed to prepare a report of schools in their limits regarding the implementation of the order. They have been directed to submit the report to competent authorities through deputy director’s offices.

Very good move... The imposition of Hindi language in indirect method should stop... Arrogant Hindis' should learn local official language Kannada. Also need to promote Kodava, Konkani, Urdu, Byari, Tulu or any other local languages prevailing also. Karnataka is multi lingual, multi religious and multi ethnic states within a state. By an large it is peaceful , people are interdependent with a mutual respect to each other barring a few fringes of arrogance in coastal area.

Teaching Kannada in all schools will indeed benefit the students. But those who wish to learn Hindi allow them to study as well. Don’t wage war on Hindi in the name of protecting Kannada.

Language is a choice left to the student.Primary and spoken kannada could be made kannada and promoted. Nowadays for any small job also good english and soft skills is a must. The govt. must concentrate in these lines rather than making Kannada compulsory

Many schools in Mangalore have changed their education system to CBSE from SBSE for reasons better known to them. Parents of students studying in such schools have no option but to continue there because transferring a child to another school is a mess altogether. However, the ruling of Kannada compulsory will not affect that student because they have studied Kannada from Class I

The hurdle will be, for the CBSE/ICSE students coming in from other states. Let's say children of those central staff getting a transfer - how will they cope up with Kannada compulsory rule? Also for those families shifting to India from abroad. How will they at-once adapt to Kannada in higher classes?

    John,

Those who do not speak Hindi and are unwilling to learn, have reached Kuwait just as you have. As such, what you have lost or they gained or all of you are how different from each other ? What if the Gulf country had made Arabic compulsory - could you crib about fellow-Indians' reluctance to speak Hindi ?

Because of this very mindset, Gulf nations have made specific number of people from all Asian countries. Else, there will be Indians (Kannadigas, Keralites, Tamils, Marathis, son on) fighting for their own existence instead of living harmoniously simply as INDIANS. Also, it has enabled people from other poor Asina countries prosper, not just India.

Good move...KN gov does not want tulu kannadigas, kodavakannadigas, konkani kannadigas and other natives of KN to feel like foreigners and get left out in KN...it will be great advantage if konkanis, bearies, tuluvas, kodavas know kannada well, if they are residing in Karnataka...otherwise they will feel alienated...

Kendriya Vidyalayas are started to take care of education needs of Central Govt/PSU employees who is subjected to frequent transfer across states, once in every 1-3 years. This objectives are highly diluted of late with natives, be it through RTE or otherwise. In the present scenario, children of central government staff need to learn atleast 4-7 local languages with proficiency and that will pull their academic performance down by several notches. Languages are just pickles and shall not be consumed like staple foods. Local language can be enforced on those claiming domicile category with employment prospects and cultural burden of local language can be imposed on them in the name of identity and culture. But rendering disproportionate weightage to local language including Hindi at the cost of English, has rippling effect on competence and performance of our candidates at international level. All science journals and research papers are published in English and how our children can update themselves to develop competence is a million dollar question. In a scenario of liberalization where people are allowed to move across boarders without much restrictions, this importance for local language is suicidal. Advantage of India in international academic and job market was purely because of proficiency in English and it is because of the same reason Chinese lost the race. For example, recent recruitment in PSU Banks show that the candidates pass tough English language, perhaps Grade 7 in international standard, but cant utter "please do not kill me" when somebody is trying on their life. China is on correction path and English is introduced as compulsory language to compete with us and, it seems, some Chinese agents and their domestic henchmen are on the job in India to make their job easy. For an academic, language is just a tool for communication, and regional fervor in the name of local languages can better be enforced on idling people who can contribute nothing...!

I very much agree with your question. The state government should have left out CBSE/ICSE from this ruling. However, by making this rule, the government is driving Kannadiga families based in GCC countries, out of the state to settle just-in-cese they families return due to job loss.

    Perhaps Mumbai.

Though it is a move to have uniform language education in all types of schools, the govt., needs to help those whose mother tongue is not Kannada to learn the subject by not making the language tough by adding "Haley Kannada" lessons which are of no use in present day Karnataka to them.
Those who want to learn all the types of Kannada can take them at college level, so that they can become future lecturers or teachers or book & poem writers.
Dakshina Kannada district needs different books relevant to our usage type unlike of present which are dominated by other parts who use the same as their dialect.
