Beltangady, Oct 9: In a swift operation, police personnel from the town station here arrested a Hindu youth when he was eloping with a lady belonging to another religion after both of them fell in love with each other. On this occasion, hundreds of youngsters from both the religions had gathered in front of the police station here.
The incident happened on Sunday October 8.
The youth from Manjotti in the taluk, who is aged 19, was in love with the 20-year-old girl from Navoor village, since the last five years. The girl had reciprocated his love in equal measure. The youth is employed at Bengaluru now while the girl, who was in college, had recently completed her education. As the family members of the girl was aware about the love interest of the girl and they disapproved it, they were keeping a close watch on her movements. Still, the girl, with help from the friends of the youth, succeeded in running away from her home on Saturday.
Thereafter, the family members of the girl filed police complaint, accusing the youth of kidnapping the girl. Police personnel who checked location of cellphones, found that the two were at Hassan. With help from Hassan police, they detected the car in which the couple was travelling. Immediately, assistance of Hassan police was sought and on Sunday, both the lovers were brought to the town police station here. On that occasion, a huge crowd comprising members of both the communities gathered in front of the police station. The situation was threatening to go out of control when BJP district Yuva Morcha president, Harish Poonja, and SDPI leader, Akbar Beltangady, reached there and succeeded in cooling the fraying tempers.
Both the lovers said that they were moving to Bengaluru on their own accord and it was not a case abduction. They also vouched for their mutual love lasting five years. After both of them recorded statements and executed bonds, they were allowed to go with their respective families.
