Mangaluru, Oct 6: In connection with a reference made to clandestine ISIS operations in coastal Karnataka by South Karnataka Salafi Movement leader, Ismail Shafi, he was questioned by the police on second day on Thursday October 5. The questioning session was conducted on the basis of audio of the leader that was shared in social website.
It is said that during the questioning, the police have gathered some important information. The police team which participated in the exercise was drawn both from the district police and city commissionerate. Sources said that if found necessary, the leader would be summoned again on Friday.
The police are keeping the information they have collected so far a closely guarded secret in view of its communally sensitive nature. Further investigation is likely to be undertaken on the basis of information now gathered.
Addressing a private meeting sometime back, Shaffi had called upon people to be wary of a gang which is trying to mislead young people in the district like in Kerala and that care should be exercised about them. Indirectly he has mentioned about the organization involved with encouraging people to join ISIS. After the audio, which is in Beary language, was shared in social website, it has given rise to controversy.
The police, who got the speech translated, have subjected Shaffi to intensive questioning. The police are concentrating on likely contacts of ISIS in the district and allegation about a leader of Kerala Madrassa having been involved with the racket.
Superintendent of police of Dakshina Kannada district said that some information has been collected during the two days of questioning of Ismail Shafi and that all the details cannot be revealed in view of their sensitive nature.
