Bengaluru: GoAir accused of denying ticket to person for speaking Kannada

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Sep 29: After allegations from a passenger that he was harassed by GoAir staff for speaking in Kannada at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), the Kannada Development Authority has issued a notice to the airline management.

The passenger Balaji Narayana Murthy alleged that 14 passengers arrived 5 minutes late to the check-in counter of GoAir for their 5.45 am flight to Mumbai on Wednesday. They were late as the overnight rain caused traffic jams, and most of them were stuck for over 30 minutes on the Trumpet Flyover to the KIA.

While the 14 passengers approached the manager for alternative tickets, Balaji spoke in Kannada to which he says he was shouted at by GoAir staffer Sandeep.

Balaji alleges that Sandeep told him that he cannot speak Kannada in the airport. He then went on to issue alternative tickets to 13 passengers but left Balaji out and said he will not get a ticket as he was speaking in local language. He was refused a refund as he came beyond stipulated time and was refused a written explanation.

Murthy says he spent Rs 9,000 to buy another ticket for Mumbai. Though he wrote his grievance to GoAir customer care, no one has replied back to him, he adds.

KDA chief S G Siddaramaiah has written to GoAir seeking action against the staff and an explanation before October 10.

Urging originations working in Karnataka to respect the language and culture of the land, he asked GoAir to submit a report explaining the action taken against the staffer concerned.

“We need to communicate that Karnataka does not need organisations that do not respect its language,” S G Siddaramaiah has said in a letter.

He has added that he will be visiting KIA on October 10 to review implementation of Kannada.

GoAir too has responded to the issue and assured it was viewing the issue with seriousness. Communication manager of GoAir, Vaibhav Tiwari said the company would never have any such 'Speak English' rule. "Though people make these kinds of allegations some times when they miss their flights, I believe this is a serious matter. We will look into the issue," he said.

I have traveled by GoAir and i have noticed that their ground staff doesnt have great manners in dealing with passengers. I say so here after having compared them with other economy airlines like Indigo and Spice. I find the other airlines ground staff much more polite in their dealings with passengers. GoAir should spend some money in training their staff and teaching them better communication skills. All should realize that Airlines is a service industry and thrives only on good service provided to customers and not just cheap economy price tickets.

So go air. in is not interested for Kannadiga passengers. You have better aviation service by Jet airways ,recently introduced INDIGO is a cheap , best ground staff, crew . They speak in regional languages .Above all they are friendly to each and every passengers. Avoid go air.in in future and try these. ...and enjoy your journey.

I had seen Kannada Menu Card on Emirates flight flying to Bangalore. That is true concern for customer service and respecting language of the place where one operates. All people who come to stay, work or do business in Karnataka should have minimum working knowledge of Kannada.

Yes. Even in Singapore airlines the first announcement is in Kannada and later English if the destination is Bangalore. No wonder why these both ( Emirates and Singapore airlines ) share top position in aviation.

It is possible that the wrong doer(in this case the passenger) is raking up language issue to be on safe side.As a consumer of services ,its better follow the rules and regulations of the service provider ..He to has his limits and cannot appease all ..
Yes if he has not provided the services he has promised then the consumer has the right to drag him to court and seek compensation.

looks like an ego issue escalated to native language usage. KIAL being stronghold of Taxi unions, local staffers of most airline companies, this looks highly unlikely.

The GoAir staffer Sandeep did not do his duty by denying ticket to a person for speaking Kannada. There are so many passengers traveling by air and they can speak only Kannada or the local language. They do not know ABC of English but they take the help of airline staff or other passengers whenever needed. GoAir management should take disciplinary action against the erring staff. This is a serious matter.

Sandeep is also an Indian and honestly he might have not understood what this man said. Every educated person in India knows English, Hindi and a regional language. What prevented this man to explain to Sandeep in Hindi or English ? This man, just wants tamasha and nothing else. Indians work anywhere in India, since they know English and Hindi.

If the Air ticket is denied just because traveler spoke in Local language, that too in the flight originating state, behavior and action of the Airline staff is highly condemnable.
In his own yard sticks, the Airline staff doesn't deserve work in Karnataka.
This type of people make local guys agitation against outsiders.
Ideally,he should have directed the traveler to a person knowing Kannada.
Above statements holds good, solely relying on travelers statements. We have not heard the Airline/staff's version.
We should be aware that, local agitations can fuel counter agitations in other regions also.
Therefore we should be reasonable, live and let live policy is always better.

First and foremost thing what I urge GoAir management should do is,terminate the service of the staff concerned for denying ticket to person for speaking Kannada.Who the, hell he is to dictate like this.He is not supposed to misbehave with the passenger like this and bring bad repute to the company.Outsiders are coming to the state and pretending like as if they are owners of the land.First of all,let him learn Kannada first and then dictate.English is in no way our national or state language. It is an adopted language. It is being used just as an communicative language to deal with the international people in view of improving business/trade.The concerned staff cannot impose any rule on anybody.

Fire that concerned staff for his negative attitude.Let him first learn to respect the language and people of the land.No Kannada,no job to the outsiders, who behave as if they are ruling the land.English is not our language, being used as communicative language in order to run our international trade smoothly.Nobody got the right to impose any rules on anybody.I urge the GoAir management to terminate from the service of the concerned staff without any consideration or sympathy. If the management shows the leniency, this practice will continue for ever.

@Jossey S.Mumbai, even when it is British airways,no reason to shout at a passenger.when he doesnt understand a local language staff should politely ask him to explain in english or other language.shouting?is end of his career in the said airways. Here the staff should be terminated and he should refund his ticket amount.I have another doubt why he shouted at him.Probably Sandeep is not at all kannadiga but either a keralite or other part of it,but no reason to shout. He could have ask his costaff to explain what he meant.Sometimes staff of some airlines think they are having a good job and can do what they want.
