Fr Tom Uzhunnalil arrives in Delhi, meets Modi and Sushma

New Delhi, Sep 28 (PTI): Fr Tom Uzhunnalil, the Kerala priest who was released recently after more than one-and-a-half years in captivity in Yemen, today met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and thanked them for their support.

The Ministry of External Affairs had been making all possible efforts to secure his safe release and was in constant touch with countries in the region which could help secure his release, the ministry said in a release.

"After the required rest and recuperation period in Vatican City, Fr Tom returned home today. On arrival, he was received by Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Tourism K J Alphons. Father Tom also met Prime Minister and External Affairs Minister," the release said.

Fr Uzhunnalil was abducted on March 4, 2016, reportedly in an incident of a terrorist attack in Aden by an unidentified group and taken to an unknown place, the ministry said.

It's pity that 1.2 BLn people and everyone talking about thanking the PM and FM. It is the duty of the country to protect the citizens irrespective of caste and creed. It is unfortunate that the mechanism to reach the PMO and FM is so complicated. One has to go through political channels to reach the ministry of external affairs.

Let us thank our PM and minister for External affairs for whatever efforts they have put in releasing the Fr Tom. Lets not bring our silly politics and express anguish over his past...We should learn to go on issue base not as party base. If not whats the difference between the fundamentalists and the rest?

He goes to Vatican, Oman or India, what if your problem. He was flown to the Vatican for medical grounds. Being a priest and having is congregation in the Vatican it's the responsibility of the congregation to look after his well being. Stop being ridiculous, can you imagine yourself abducted for 18 months and then taken straight to meet the prime minister .

Some commented here that it was Oman and Vaticans efforts. If so, it was not necessary for Fr. Tom to meet Modi or Sushma.

Only Fr. Tom know the truth not the commentators here...

Anyway, our citizen is back in his home land....

He got released by the efforts of Vatican administration and by the help His Majesty The Sultan of Oman. Shushma swaraj might have been helped on diplomatic level but the credit goes to His Majesty of Oman and the Vatican administration.
Only our external affairs ministry works perfectly in our NDA government.
Now BJP will market it in such a way that whole world will believe them.

I fully agree with Mr. G. Bhandary, Kaikamba/Muscat. It is only because of the efforts of our King His Majesty Sultan Qaboos of Oman and the Vatican Administration under the initiative of our Bishop Paul Hinder he was rescued. Because he is an employee of Vatican, the first responsibility comes on them and they performed their duties honestly. Everyone, who are leaving in Arab Countries, specially Christians were up to date on the status of Fr. Tom from the day he was abducted and everyone was asked to pray for his safe release during daily masses. So, the credit must go to who really deserve, that is our HM and Vatican mainly and with the blessings of Lord almighty. And this is the truth.
