Mangaluru: Man crushed to death as lorry hits scooter at Jeppinamogaru

Mangaluru, Sep 26: A man was crushed to death in a ghastly accident at Jeppinamogaru here on the night of Tuesday September 26.

The deceased has been identified as Babu Ballaya (40), a resident of Jeppinamogaru.

The accident took place when a lorry with a national permit (KL-02-AN-7779) dashed into Babu's scooter.

The lorry was plying towards Kasargod, while Babu was riding from Pumpwell towards his house in Jeppinamogaru.

An eyewitness said Babu was also riding in the same direction as the lorry. The lorry driver suddenly changed lane and dashed into Babu's scooter's handle. Babu lost control and came under the lorry's tyre, getting crushed to death on the spot.

A case has been registered.

    One has to take double care while riding near trucks and big vehicles...truck drivers are worst in Manglore. they seems to be least bother about small vehicles moving around them.

    I'm deeply saddened by the news. My deepest sympathies go out to the grieving family. May god give them the peace that they seek.

    I too had recently met with an accident where my scooter (It was a peek traffic hour and I, along with many other vehicles, was at halt) was hit by speeding water tanker and my scooter was damaged completely (luckily I survived the accident with only a few minor injuries). The only regret that I have is that I didn't sue the driver. I let him go. By not suing, I basically told him that it's alright to drive in a reckless manner and cause harm to others. Actually, I didn't sue because the police at the Konaje Police Station advised me not to sue as it would take at least five years for the court to resolve the case and that the other person could turn the case against me. I did speculate that the Police were paid up by the tanker owner and felt like I shouldn't listen to them but what could I do? I was alone and didn't know much about the procedures. So, I gave in. Now, there's one more case in the news (not so far from where I stay) and I do feel guilty.

    A part of the blame (in this accident case) goes to me and all those other victims of accidents who didn't sue. The tanker owner, in the police station, in front of the police, had said to me, "Indh maamuliye. Yenna masth accident aathnd. Case manpuna pura agathya ijji, insuranced settle apund." (" This is so common. I've been in many accidents. There's need to file a case as the insurance could be claimed." ) So, he took the situation lightly because none of the people he hit had sued him. Maybe he would have driven carefully the day I met with the accident if he knew there were consequences to reckless driving. A part of the blame goes to the police officers who make light of the situation and advise not to go ahead with the case (for petty money or whatever their reasons are).

    Please, please don't be afraid to sue. It's the only way to make them pay and also avoid future cases.

    Agreed, in Mumbai also when heavy vehicles hit the cops easily let them go. Even we had faced a similiar situation by a reckless tanker driver who damaged our car bu we were safe and cops told us not to wait because traffic will accumulate.

    The owners of the this heavy vehicles probably give hafta to cops, no wonder they drive recklessly without fear as if they are owners of the road. Problem is that public also doesnot help to give good thrashing to these drivers who are so inhuman that they will not flinge even to take lives of common people on road most of the times leaving family members without any source of income.

    2 wheelers please give way for bigger vehicles, and don't ride on right lane. And 4 wheelers please keep distance from 2 wheelers.

    There is no ego problem if one follow large vehicles..

    Some amount of speed is required for all the vehicles otherwise vehicle behind you will collide...

    Punishment for murder must be death or blood money to deceased family. We need this rule implemented badly in India. Otherwise innocents are killed.

    only it happens in india heavy vehicle hits small vehicles .I never seen in gulf or any other countries. police department should watch these killer drivers. and stop and put fine for over speed of vehicles.

    From the account provided it appears like a case of reckless driving. Accidents like these are so common these days despite the attempts made by all concerned to keep them under control. Mostly accidental deaths are related to two wheelers and trucks.

    Hope law will deal with this situation and the guilty punished
