Mangaluru: No takers for vending zone created by city corporation

Mangaluru, Sep 15: The vending zone created by the city corporation here in conformity with directives issued by the Supreme Court last year is wearing a deserted look as there are no vendors there.

The said zone is located behind the tempo stand near Lady Goschen Hospital. There is space for about 500 street vendors to function from there. As basic infrastructure has not been provided at the venue, it is said, vendors are not showing any interest to operate from there. They have shifted their businesses back to their original spots by the roadsides, claiming that they are not getting customers at the vending zone. These street vendors have been creating hindrance for traffic movement.

The vending zone where about 500 vendors can function, was created near the town hall when Harinath was the city mayor, by spending huge sum of money and identity cards were issued to 220 vendors. The vendors have been saying that there is no roof or seating at the vending zone and separate slots have not been marked for vendors.

It may be recalled that current mayor, Kavita Sanil, had expressed her determination to act against illegal street vendors and that operations against them will continue.

    No roof or seating arrangement??? Did the corporation provide for the same on the foot path?? These guys don't pay any taxes or rent and they have the audacity to ask for these facilities?

    Initial problems will be always there since general public are not aware of this new vending zone. Just put a banner showing the directions to the vending zone and vendors business will be back to normal.

    Street vending should be made illegal and enforced strictly.People should stop purchasing from street vendors and discourage the business.
    Street vending has increased the corruption in the police department as vendors keep giving hafta to police to operate illegally.This is the main reason police don't take any action on them.
    They are encroaching the foot path and parking space etc.In places like Bangalore with so much crowd, they make the people walk on the road that causes the traffic to slow down.
    they make the surrounding dirty.In directly provide the breeding point for mosquitoes and flies
    They don't pay tax to city municipality and they harm the business who are paying the tax.

    By just providing a land space without roof, basic infrastructure, it is difficult for both vendors and public to do business in this allocated area.

    Mayor should use some common sense, besides just providing ID cards.

    Babu..............currently what facilities are used by these goons on street. ? just think government has provided decent and safe place to do business to street Venders, be polite and make use of it, we mangalorean need bus to stop at our house gate and vegetable and fruits to be delivered in our kitchen.

    Atleast, take a look at street vendors at Hong kong, and then get sensible before bla bla bla!!!

    You are one of those who think street vendors and customers should stand in the rain and sun to conduct business in spite of they are given land without toilets, garbage disposal, storage facilities etc.??

    When people are moved from slums and given land by the govt. or NGOs, do they still have to live the same way they lived in the slums(according to you logic)...???

    The name it self is Street vendors. Means they do their business in such a place where commuter are moving. Our MCC has given such a place to them where no commuters are moving around. How can they do their business. Make good arrangements to them that their footpath business do not disturb commuters.

    Our people/public instead of supporting action taken by MCC, they support these street vendors. Since the public cant walk on our roads and footpaths so comfortably and freely it is better to shift them to the new place The street vendors think that the present place occupied near SBI is their ancestral property. So Mayor and her team should take stern action against the street vendors to vacate them from roadside.

    This is all happening because of our lazy public.
    and Easy business vendors.
    We can only cry for bad conditions in the city. We should realize that, we are responsible for it.
