Karwar, Sep 14: Nine pilgrims including seven from a single family met death in an accident which happened at Arebail village near Yellapur in Uttara Kannada district on Wednesday September 13 morning. The deceased include three children and three women.
The pilgrims had travelled to Subrahmanya in Dakshina Kannada district in connection with a religious ceremony relating to a child from the family. The SUV in which the pilgrims were seated hit a truck that had been parked by the roadside, killing nine persons on the spot. A friend of the family, Gajanan Bapu Metri (27), was the only survivor of this accident. He suffered serious injuries and is being treated at Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences hospital at Hubballi.
The people who were killed in this horrific accident are Vivek Vasant Ghatge (34), Vaishnavi Vivek Ghatge (5), Abhinay Chandrakant Akamble (3), Varadaraj Vivek Ghatge (18 months), Sachin Madhukar Jandenavar (28) , Renuka Chandrakant Kamble (30), Gouravva Vasant Metri (58),Menaka Vivek Ghatge (28), and driver of the vehicle, Mujeeb Iqbal (32). The SUV was badly mangled in the accident and police had a hard time removing bodies from debris of the vehicle.
Vasant Ghatge family from Nidagundi village in Raibagh taluk in Belagavi district is into politics. Because of business interests, the family had relocated itself near Raibagh railway station. Shyam Ghatkge from the family happens to be a former Congress MLA.
