Bengaluru, Sep 13: The state high court (HC) wanted to know from the state government why laws aimed at stopping illegal slaughter of cattle and other animals in vogue are not being strictly enforced.
The bench of the high court presided over by Justice Aravind Kumar, was hearing a criminal application filed by Gau Gyan Foundation against the government and Shivajinagar police who it said, have failed to obey the directions issued to accord protection to cattle and other animals which were illegally detained in and around Shivajinagar area in the city.
The HC asked the government and police as to why The Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Cattle Preservation Act is not being properly implemented. It wanted to know from the state government about the steps it has been taking towards strict implementation of this act. It also sought from the public prosecutor about the stand of the government over the proposed implementation of Cow Vigilance Committees that is under the consideration of the Supreme Court now. It asked the prosecutor to inform the court if the government is unable to implement the law so that the court itself will pass suitable orders.
Public prosecutor, H Rachaiah, who was present during the hearing, sought time to provide information about steps taken by the government to stop illegal animal slaughter. He also said that the government supports some suggestions given by the petitioners for the protection of animals. The bench, after hearing this presentation, adjourned the case to September 13.
